Audio rack (what to get) - Page 2

Hey I have another option that you might like...It's acctulay the rack that I'm going to buy..Unfortunatly you can't see a pic on the net yet but Futureshop just started carying them and they arnt on the site yet. I found some TV stands of the same design, so use you imagination..the tower is 4 shelves of thick tempered glass 26"x23"x48'. It's Damn nice for $200 CAD

This is the TV stand.

Edit: It's made by Z-Line...so just ask FS if they have on in tha back if you don't see one on the floor

I really hate to put a damper on things, but most of the racks that have been suggested are rather poor in dealing with vibration issues, however pleasing or cheap they may be. They merely hold equipment.

Racks that significantly issole the equipment from adverse vibrations are expensive. At a minimum I would look to something like Solidsteel 6 series. The four shel rack (6.4) is the minimum that I would consider in terms of acceptable issolation. Racks in the 2k-4K range are significantly better yet. This is one area of audio, wher diminishing returns does not apply, in my experience.

If you can't afford a really good rack that provides significant issolation, build the TNT rack and save up. If you have or aspire to heigh-end equipment, a great rack is an esssential.

I'm building a tnt like rack.
So far I have bought some finished wood that has a very nice black finishing, no need to paint it, although I will iron on some of that stuff to the bare perimeter of it (the height of the shelves is what I am referring to.)

I have also bought 3 48" threaded rods and 2 72" aluminium tubes to possibly cover them, have yet to decide what to do, my design may vary from the TNT flexy, it's all up to how my dad decides to do this with me, at the moment I'm not sure what he's planning to do.

For the shelves themselves, I bought a 96"x16 1/2" piece of finished wood and had it cut into 22"x16 1/2" dimensions, I have 4 pieces and plan to get another piece of wood and add another 2-3 shelves. I am opting for 6-7 inches between shelves as none of my components are larger then 5 inches in height, some are only 1-2 inches in height.

PS, what should I do with the remainding 2 8"x16 1/2" pieces of wood from the large pieces of wood I cut up?

Sounds like you have a good plan together for the audio rack.

As for the leftover wood, cut it into strips about 3"-4" tall and miter the ends. That way, you can form four pieces into a box. Get a sheet of copper, aluminum or steel cut to the size of the top, then screw it on.

You will then have a chassis to build a nice tube amp on. You know you want one.

If I was to build a tube amp, I'de probably just end up building a retro computer . Heh, nah, I have no plans to build anything any time soon. I was thinking as using these inbetween stacked components for isolation or whatever people rave about when they buy those really expensive small wooden pieces.

Responding 23 hours and 59 minutes after somebody intially posted is so cool.

Ah, I have just completed a preliminary build. It looks rather cool, so it's a shame the last 2 days I was on temp ban, or else I would had probably kept a log (I didn't take pictures for each step becasue I knew I'de mix them up all up.)

Now I am going to get some stuff to clear the wood up (got chipped a bit) iron on the stuff to make the edges pretty, buy some pvc and spray paint it black, and then finish the rack off. For about $100 CAD, it is coming out VERY nice.
