I personally wouldn't buy a receiver if you're only planning on playing music, there're a lot of extra features that you get charged for, and I'd would rather buy a amplifier that was designed to do one task well (play music), rather than something that is decent for everything, especially if you're not going to use it for everything. If you're strapped for cash the NAD 3020 is a classic and has been considered as one of the best valued integrated amps ever created, it can often be found for around $160 in excellent condition.

But if you want surround and a sub I think it's good, and probably a lot better then the cheaper HTIBS you can find on the market. You can always try them out, best buy and futureshop both have good return policies (30 days.) You don't need to get vintage equipment though, I've seen a lot of modern stuff like the NAD stuff rather cheap, I think I saw an intergrated amp from them for like $200 CAD. Like I said, check www.canuckaudiomart.com, theirs a lot of good stuff. Here's an example, although a bit expensive. http://www.canuckaudiomart.com/detai...5-nad_c320bee/
That's not a very good deal, you know the C320BEE sells for only $400 new right? Also for that extra $40 not only do you get a new player, you also get the NAD warranty (Which is why I bought my NAD C352 new), which isn't included if you buy any NAD product used.

I havent been sitting around.. I've mailed Future Shop, Best Buy and Staples concerning the pirce match. Stapled offered the speakers for 400$ CAD without taxes. And I would have to return them at my own cost since on their site say that you have to mail the product. With taxes thats 460$ CAD... Future Shop offered them for 420$ because they take NCIX price and add the most expensive shipping. Best buy are looking into the inquery.
I've also mailed the store from which I can have them for 360$ (and would cost me nothing for shipping) and they order it as well but arrives in 2 days...They don't have a return policy since they're a small store. And getting the thing from future shop... I'll still have to return it if I like it and get it 60$ cheaper from the other store....it's a lot of hassle... I still do not know but I'm checking out amps/speakers as well... I'm happy I made my mother realise that the 5300 suck so maybe I could stratch the budget to 680 CAD... Going to check out some stores tmrow and talk to people around..

Let me tell you one thing. Although bestbuy and futureshop are supose to pricematch and take the most expensive shipping method, where I went they took the cheapest method, I would not bother mailing, and just drop by a few stores with the NCIX printout of the cheapest shipping and the speakers, I got lucky, when I bought my 5500's NCIX had the shipping very cheap. That's how I got them so cheap. The guys at some FS/ BB like the one I went to may be really flexible, while other stores may not even want to price match.

One thing I know for sure is that I'll get an reciever and speakers I want one with more than two channels because for sure I'll want to upgrade the speakers, add some more in the future.

So from what I understand is that A/V recievers not even Harman kardon or such are a no no for music? Yes skyline, I'll listen to mostly music, but from time to time I also play a game and watch quite a lot of movies/tv shows and I dont want them to sound suckier than on my 5300.

So NADS and marantz are known for their peformance in music, warm clear sound...? While this Panasonic is harsher? I doubt that I could tell the difference as my level of expertise is quite low hehehe...also digital isn't it a plus also? Or a minus? And how important is the watt rating per channel in int. amps? How much does it matter if I pair them up with a pair of speakers that are rated higher. And 8 ohms and 6 ohms. Does a preamp power the speakers more with a rating of 6ohms than with a rationg of 8ohms for exemple? 25W at 6 ohms and 20W at 8ohms or how does it work?

Recievers are fine for music. There's nothing inherently wrong with a reciever, and you can get very good sound out of them. Though at the high end, they get outclassed by seperates.

NAD, Marantz, and most of the vintage gear in favor are known for warm sound. The Krells, most professional gear, and well designed digital amps are known for clear sound. "Warmth" in an amplifier is the product of increased second harmonic distortion and frequency response imbalances. Some say it sounds better, some prefer to do without it.

In a nearfield rig, power won't be an issue. You're good to go with pretty much any speaker as long as you have at least 30W.

If the amp has the current capacity, halving the impedance (ohms) can double the power. So a 30W into 8 ohm amp can have up to 60W into 4 ohms. Current capacity will catch up though, so instead of 60W into 4 ohms, you may get 45W into 4 ohms. Also, some amps aren't stable at lower impedances, especially digital ones.
