Recabling KSC-75s.

Yeah, I searched, but I didn't find the answers to a few questions I have:
1. Every set of Koss phones I've ever owned (five sets now) has deteriorated at the plug, suggesting either that I abuse my plugs or that Koss makes low-quality plugs. So I'm replacing my plug. I went to Radio Shack and bought one that looks decent, but I only want to replace the plug. How does one go about reusing the cable? Just snip off the old plug and wire it back together, or is there some danger to that?

2. Speaking of which, how do I do this? Since the KSC-75s have physically identical casings (the removable clips are what determines which side is which), wiring the drivers to the wrong side is no problem, but which wire is the ground wire?

TLDR versions:
1. Can I just re-use my old Koss cable? I'm basically just replacing the plug.
2. Which wire is the ground wire?

I am an oaf: I failed to include pictures of the plug that I bought, which may assist you (or not, I dunno):

Ground is black. Red is right. Green or blue or whatever is left. You can use your old wire, or you could upgrade the cable since you have to replace it anyways. Be gentle with the phones! And remember, check the connector diagram twice, solder once!

Okay, so this is how noobish I am:
So I did the left wire and ground, but it was tough becuase I had to deal with that damn fuzz.

What is the purpose of the fabric in the headphone cable? And do I need to strip the actual wire of the plastic sheaf that holds it together with the fabric fuzz stuff, or can I just solder it with the sheaf on and hope that the solder melts it? Because it's tough to do it without the sheaf.

The fabric is probably meant to insulate. Only solder exposed wire. Solder is already impure and you don't want to get more impure materials mixed in with the solder connection.

Okay, so another question: I had to re-do it (many, many times) and I noticed this last time (my most successful try so far) that when I had just the left phone plugged up, it was playing steady at full volume, but as soon as I had the right lead soldered on and held the right ground to the plug, my left stopped. Why is that?

Also, where can I buy some decent headphone cable at a low price? I'm sick of this ****ing fabricky stuff and the cable is getting shorter than my patience (cause I keep snipping it whe I mess up, see). I just want something cheap and competent--i.e., at least up to the stock cable's level, but not more than $10-15 for four or five feet.

Can I use speaker wire to make new cables? They have spools of the stuff at Radio Shack. Would that give at-least-stock quality? And if I did, what would I use to enclose the stuff? I see people here with nice braided tubing, where could I get some of that?
