Heh, heh. Perhaps, mm. Perhaps.

Btw, I have the 2-CD version of "Begin to Hope". I haven't scrutinized the entire CD, but do not hear the distortion in the specific phrase asked about in that other thread. Maybe the mp3 rips distributed over the Internet are from a poorly made demo such as the one you obtained?

Also, I have never listened to "Soviet Kitsch", so I can't comment on that album.

So do I, just mentioning all the times I hear it would take a long time.

I only have the 1cd version. I do actually have the bonus disc, but that wasnt quite so 'bought'.

i have to go look at the track listing for both the bonus and 2cd. i don't even know what the difference is song wise.

this makes me pretty mad. i am going to blow the whistle here. it is a&r budget. any of this music with real instruments and mic'ing takes time and money to record real nicely. there is simply not enough revenue. at least as the labels see it.

i think liz phair is great. this has happened to an even worse extent on all of her releases. to me if you are going to do a half ***** job, don't do it at all. the "suits" upstairs don't ever see it that way.

besides my feeling that damage can occur, i just cannot listen to that.
if someone told me "i'll let you have my porsche. no charge. the mechanic said it will probably explode in the next 200 miles and it is unfixable" as much as i'd like a free porsche i'd have to pass on that one. then i'd just be mad that the "teaser" was extended to me in the first place.

oh well. soon enough her catchy songs will be out of my head and all will be well again.

Just a heads-up for the fans: she'll be on 'Last Call w/Carson Daily' tonight.

I don't see how a little clipping can totally destroy speakers, especially at reasonable volumes. I also don't understand how you can say that because it clips a few times, it's ruined, despite the fact that the amount of compression and clipping are considerably less than many other commercial releases. It's at least a step in the right direction, right?

I have a question about clipping... In this modern age of computer recording, why would a final mix ever clip? I mean, there are peak meters everywhere in DAW applications. Also, if 0 dB is full-scale output, how is it possible to go past 0 dB and store it on a CD (or is it possible at all)?

OK, I'm hearing tons of clipping/distortion in "Begin to Hope" and it's annoying as hell. What a disappointment.

Here are two examples:

Track 4 "On the Radio" time 1:08 lyric "again"
Track 5 "Fields below" time 3:03-3:06 lyric "come and go"

Can anyone else confirm this? As far as I know my CD is original, but I guess you never know.

like what's been said before "Begin to Hope" is a little more polished up than her previous albums and does lose a little rawness and emotion along the way but it's still an ok album, maybe a little too "pop-like" for my liking but nevertheless.

I found out about her last year and went to see her live at a student union in Glasgow. She's got an amazing voice, one that makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.. that's nothing to do with how she experiments with it or how quirky it can be.

I think her best album is "mary-ann and the gravediggers and other short stories" (think that's what it's called).. i just wasn't impressed when Begin to Hope came out, sorta lost something important along the way.

Regina is funny, a loveable person and writes crazy little songs, all of which are good.. a few of my favourites are "Consequence of Sound" & "Chemo Limo" - probably the two songs with the most depth if you know what i mean but that's as far as she goes.

Good artist and found what she's good at and she does it well, not sure how long she'll last though!

i thought i'd metion this. at some point the cd in question was "repaired". i don't think it was entirely remastered though. i heard a copy purchased at retail a couple weeks ago and the distortion is gone.

now comes "far" which has a very small amount of distortion in a few areas. at reasonable volume levels it is not really an issue. i think it is the dynamic range of her quirky voice. they must set the mic preamp in one place and all the sudden she requires attenuation.

i am happy they finally went and fixed begin to hope. of course if it matters to you and you already bought it you will have to repurchase. one problem, there is no indication of which is the "fixed" cd. so you could potentially buy old stock and get the same thing twice!

overall, i think her style is great. i really like her music. i have all of her cd's now.

This is an old thread, so I expect no response.

I was listening to this album "Begin to Hope" and also noticed the crackling distortion in a number of places. So I am glad I could check on this forum to find that it is indeed the recording itself, and not my equipment!

It's not totally ruined to me, but it is annoying. I did not know they fixed it, but I only got my copy from a library, so it is probably the older recording. I do not know if the download versions from itunes would have this distortion or not,  I may look into it.

I don;t think her newer album "Far" had this problem at all.
