Which Lite DAC for me? - Page 2

I just finished modding a DAC-60. With the right tubes, it's shockingly good. So good that I may productize it with USB interface. I really like the sound of the 1704 DAC's. They seem like the real McCoy. Great bass, too, for tubes.

Either way, a stock DAC 60 compared to these two sounds somewhat congested in the high end and lacking some dynamics. Its worth getting the mod.
Which version of modded DAC 60 are you referring to? AFAIK, various outfits are doing different things to them...

Hi, I have an stock Lite Dac-Ah and I prefer its sound to the Dac in my Arcam CD73. At $150 the Lite Dac-Ah is a great deal.

How reliable are they. Can you trust ...

Thomas, I cannot directly answer your question but online I ordered a stock DAC-Ah and then reconsidered the deal. Tried to cancel the order via online and did not receive confirmation. Called them on the phone and a very nice fellow returned my call, talked through my needs and reason for cancelling and promptly sent a return check for the entire amount - I received the return check within a week. For me a solid return policy is the ultimate sign of trust and they passed the test for me.

Just wondering if I should go non-oversampling or with an upsampling version as well as tubed or SS. I have no experience with DACs in a headphone rig. Do I even need a DAC? I do not want to add something that may sound worse.

I know I have not even heard the NAD in my system yet, but I am just doing some homework here. Any advice would be helpful to me. Thanks, Bill

Bill,

One of the PacificValve staffers has a blog and he reviews all of the DACs his company sells. He prefers the next to highest end model over the others - I believe it is the DAC60 but I am not sure. He also explains his personal listening preference - it's all about the midrange for him even at the cost of tonal balance. Here is a link>> http://victrolax.blogspot.com/

How would you characterize what's good about it.

Just as importantly, how would you characterize its shortcomings. (I am aware of what some others have said about graininess, I'm asking about your personal experience.)

I find the sound more detailed and clearer, I can hear individual notes better. The biggest shortcoming is that I want a second unit for my bedside rig.

For an interesting test to compare clarity I recommend

I found going through this test with various components very educational. After some training you end up leveling off and the differences in your results with changing components become pretty stable. This does unfortunately not work with CD players.

You can do better than that, I know you can ;-)

Cool. But it gives a 404 error.

I just purchased one waiting for it to arrive. I liked the TDA1543 nos DAC from the very cheap Muse and now I bought an upgraded Lite DAC with blackgate caps. It will be interesting to see if it is better than the Muse.
