Greg,

I don't know this rep personally.I know that some manufacturers make a sport out misinforming the public,I fell victim to this at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas earlier this year. The player seemed legit and the fact that it had a model number and is shown on the J&R site leads me to believe that what I saw was as close to a production unit as there is right now.Now that I think about it,I never really used the remote or loaded a disc.I did help the guy carry the box out to his car and it was much heavier that the typical consumer CDP.The J&R site does mention the DACs and power supplies,so I'm thinking that those made production as well.I don't think this guy was trying to keep any big secrets about the player,he was really proud of it and made sure we all got the model number correct. The new SACD was devoid of cover art and was an early promo.I have no idea when the disc will be released but I can't wait.If the hardware keeps getting better and the software rolls out at a faster rate with more classic titles and big releases,I can see SACD finally making some real headway. This is a good time to be a music lover.

That's an amazing emoticon, KR! Perhaps player at this price point will finally work up enough demand to get the software folks moving!

I wonder whether this player will be dusting off mid-fi turntables?

I was going to get my Sony 500v upgraded, but with this player coming out I am wondering if the Philips unit will sound better all around than a modded 500v, which even after mods will not upsample Redbook CD's.

Tuberoller, can you offer some thoughts on how this Philips compares to the Sony unit in both SACD and Redbook playback?

Thanks for the info Tube! Actually just posted a thread for info on a bargain DVD players that had great CD playback the other day. Am actively scouring the sofa cushions for loose change as we speak, er, type!

As interested as I am in this new player (or its successors), I really don't think it will have any effect on the vinyl market. We're talking about the difference between "apples and oranges" for sure...They're totally different beasts!

I think that CDs and LPs are not going anywhere, anytime soon.

nice personal pic Jeff Guidry!

I'm really not familiar with the mods available for the Sony NS500V,but I bet the new Philips will be superior in nearly every way to the Sony.It will initially have a street price that is more than double that of the Sony,so I am hoping that it will indeed be much better performing.

The redbook playback of the Sony has always been good, but the real selling point the NS500V has been it's excellent SACD playback.I think the new Philips will greatly improve upon redbook CD playback and offer fantastic SACD sonics as well.

[B]Springsteen catalog rumors??? Please explain

A number of people in the industry, including one that I heard recently on the radio have commented that sources within Sony have made statements that the Springsteen catalog is one of their "aces in the hole". Intended to be played when either SACD is in serious trouble of losing out to DVD-Audio, or when it appears that Sony and the SACD forces can finish off DVD-Audio (which I expect "could" be possible sooner rather than later, if things continue as they are).
I expect the Stones releases were the first "ace" to be put on the table, with Bruce Springsteen and others to follow. If you think about it, it only makes sense.

lol... That's what everyone says.

One of these days jude will have to create a "Head-Fi" dating service... Then again, audiophile marriages might have problems such as the notorious "How the DVD-A and SACD conflict is like our relationship" talk

For me, it would be a question of music...

"No dear, I don't think my system brings out the best in the new Sting CD"

UGH!!

Thanks for your thoughts Tuberoller.....I have a potential new job with bigger income coming, so I might well buy the Phillips unit AND mod the 500v, and use the one that sounds best all around as my main player and use the other as a DVD player mainly.

Thanks KR... I have been getting into the art of Francis Bacon lately, and I found this perfect sized little thumbnail to use.
