How can I be able to tell whether to mod it or not? I have not idea what size my ear canals are.. Also, I am using the AL iM716's and I don't know if it will be a step up or down in comfort/SQ..

When I push a triple flange deep into my ear , the smallest flange goes too deep and causes pain because it is so small. After doing this once I decided to mod it into a bi-flange. The fit and comfort is so much better. I've since switched over to foamies for the most part due to increased comfort and sound quality that I get with foam.
Of course after you cut them(and be carful if you do) there's no going back unless you buy new ones.
Good luck.
