these voices are beautiful to me:

Alison Shaw (of Cranes)
Bjork
Lisa Gerrard
Margo Timmins (of Cowboy Junkies)

...and a girl on the the radio I heard once. It was a CBC interview, and in that interview she said, "when you open up your throat to sing, it's the same as when you open your throat to cry." All this with music playing underneath and between the interview. Unfortunately I was half asleep when I heard it, but it was amazingly beautiful and full of emotion like I've never heard before. Maybe I dreamed it, but it's stayed with me for years. I almost don't want to know who it was because the memory is so wonderful and powerful!

Well, I don't really hear a lot of stuff from female singers, but from the things I hear, I'd say (in no particular order):

Tarja Turunen (ex-nightwish)
Mariza (portuguese fado singer)
Teresa Salgueiro (madredeus, portuguese band: www.madredeus.com)
Mariah Carey (not really the type of music I hear, but I really think she has a great voice)
Sarah McLachlan

There are a few more I could mention, that could easily be here too, but it's just a top five so ...

Louise Rhodes(of Lamb)
Ana Caram
Rebecca Coseboom(of Halou)
Rebecca Pidgeon

Ummm...

- Anita Baker
- Sade
- Macy Gray
- Toni Braxton
- Umm... have to pick Japanese one... Miki Imai. Very soothing, motherly voice.

Tori Amos.

Her voice live is the most beautiful thing I have ever heard - God Damn.

I can't believe she hasn't been mentioned yet.

I'm going to go with names that haven't been mentioned yet...

Marcella Bovio (Elfonia, Ayreon, Stream of Passion)
Sharon den Adel (Within Temptation, Aryeon)
Asrid van der Veen (The Endorphins, Ayreon)
Cristina Scabbia (Lacuna Coil)
Tarja Turunen (ex-Nightwish) (okay, so she's been mentioned already)
and Michelle Branch

I might have a thing for Ayreon talent, I don't know

Then you forgot Irene Jansen (star-one, Ayreon) ... she has a great power voice

Marcella has a very smooth voice and has a great range (highs and lows). She's good.

Btw, Sharon too, but I don't really like Within Temptation's latest musics ... they seem way too pop (wtf is "memories"!?!)

You see, this is such a limitative topic ... only 5 of a lot of good female voices. And there are a lot more that I don't even know.

We've got a similar appreciation-- I think you'd love Stars' Amy Millan if you haven't heard her already, Jenny Lewis of Rilo Kiley as well. Amy's making a solo album and Jenny Lewis already did, from what I remember.

If I were to mention Irene, I'd have to mention her sister Floor, also.

I just noticed that it's a top 5, oh well.

Liz Fraser (Cocteau Twins) - Her vocals got kind of weird in their later releases but for my money she's got it. I think one of her finest moments is the accoustic version of "Half-gifts" from the TWINLIGHTS ep. Beee-yooo-tiful..

Others:

Margaret Fiedler (Moonshake & Laika).
Lisa Gerrard (Dead Can Dance)
Jennifer Charles (Elysian Fields)
Hope Sandoval (Mazzy Star)
