Headfi claims they require 300+ hours of burn in

they probably do, and I still prefer Sennheiser sound to anything else (personal preference)

I think I'd give a very small nod to the 701"s, but you won't make a mistake either way. Check out the 600's too.
Excellent answer, since that is exactly what I would say if I could say it that well.

I would add that for classical and Jazz, IMHO, the relative performance of the two depends on the type of amp used. Some tubes can make the 650s sound too sweet and give a little more edge to the 701s. If your source is solid state, or a little brighter (Benchmark DAC1 headphone out for example) the Senns might improve relative to the 701s.

Have both, keeping both.

I use a recently restored Fisher X-1000 tube amp, the best integrated that Fisher ever made - 44 years old. Count em - twelve 12AX7's in the preamp alone! It throws a soundstage so huge you just can't believe it. The sound is maybe slightly warm, but also incredibly detailed. With this amp, I think the K701's take a little better advantage than the HD650's. Actually, the 650's sound great out of a Fisher 500C.

All of the 650 / 701 rivalry aside, the cans that really have come alive with the X-1000 are the K501's. They seem to really love the tubes. They make a great deal of full, unbloated bass with the Fisher amp, this in contrast to their "lean bass' reputation.

The jury is still out, but the 501's might be my first choice in my setup.

I had the HD280 and there are huge differences between K701 and that one. Even when leaving out the soundstaging, accurate highs and tight bass (after burn-in some more, more than 350 hours for me now), it is also the midrange that the K701 clearly takes away. Both are not comparable IMHO.

If you must choose an headphone in...

Eh, tough call because the real answer is to get both because they complement each other rather well. But here's my stab, assuming proper sources, amping, etc.

Classical - nod to 650
Pop - K701
Jazz - slight nod to K701

Tough to answer, but:

Classical -K701
Jazz -Senn 600/650
Pop -K701

On budget systems, there often is no reason to go higher than the 600 or even 580 level.
I don't know, I was comparing the 600 to the 650 recently out of ipod lineout-cheap headamp (forget what it was, but nothing that good) and the difference between the two was immediately obvious.

Dan,

I'm in agreement that you'll be happy with the sound quality of either set of phones; the differences aren't great enough to matter unless you have highly developed preferences concerning tonal balance, etc.

You might want to throw comfort into the mix. The Senns have a smaller earcup and much greater clamping pressure than the AKGs. I can wear either comfortably for long periods but some folks are bothered by the so-called "Sennheiser vice grip". There's really no predicting how someone will react but, from my experience, it seems that one would be less likely to have comfort issues with the K701.

Too bad you can't try both phones - for sound and comfort - before you buy.

Good luck!

Just to throw another opinion into the mix : I personally find the Senns more comfortable. They stay securely on your head. The AKG's self-adjusting headband makes the earcups ride upwards and puts pressure on my earlobes. For people with big heads (such as myself), it's a lot easier to find a good fit with the Senn; the AKG has to be stretched to maximum and still tends to push against my ears.
