Curse you, Redwine!

I received my iMod from Redwine yesterday. Wow, good stuff...but now I definitely need to move my whole library over to lossless. I could hear a small difference between 320kbs MP3s and lossless before, but now the gap seems bigger to me. A blessing and a curse

Now to find a good portable bag for the rig.

fierce,

Congratulations on your iMod. I agree, Vinni makes that iPod sound GOOD!

You are wise to convert to lossless. Join the club of those who had to do just the same!!

You serious?! I can't possibly imagine ripping my whole 70gb library again! Much of it is already in AIFF/ALAC, but the majority is in 320kbps AAC/MP3...

I must resist getting the iMod!

I've been pondering something...I'm definitely going lossless (well, to a point). If I rip all my CDs to wav (at default 44.1 khz) would cutting them all down to 32khz wavs before using a lossless encoder result in smaller file sizes? (i can't really hear above 16khz, so I figure 32khz is probably fine and may save me some space).

don't. the whole point of encoding losslessly is to retain the exact audio information as it was on the CD (which are 44khz).

Yeah, I understand that...I just figured that since my hearing was shot above 16-17khz that I could save some space (and also battery life due to loading).

Once again. When anyone asks me advice when going into PC audio, my first, second, and third advice is always: Rip into Lossless files (doesn't matter which).

Your tastes may change, your gear may change, and your may even go from one lossless format to another lossless format, BUT as long as you've done it correctly the first time, you will never have to go through the agony of Re-ripping all your music...

... until your iModded iPod is FULLY burned in!!! There is an even bigger sound difference between MP3 and lossless. Luckly for me I have always ripped in lossless. What amazes me most about the iMod is the "blackground" and increased soundstage, soundstage seems to just get better and better! I have around 70 hours on mine and it's truly amazing. The music just seems to attack you out of complete darkness... I LOVE IT!!!!! And Vinnie is one of the greatest guys to work with, excellent customer service. I overnighted my iPod to Vinnie, he "iModded" it the next day and shipped it back that evening! WHAT SERVICE!!!

(Sorry about the digression above but Red Wine Audio rules - now back to the topic of ripping!!)

Yeah, blackground and sense of space are certainly some of the strengths of the iMod. I've got about 10 hours on mine...can't wait to hear it at 300+

Indeed, the RedWineAudio iMod has been a godsend for me -- truly great sound from the iPod.

MANY THANKS!

Hi Guys,

Thank you all very much for the nice feedback! I apologize for not participating as much on headfi...I have been beyond busy with iMods, and lots of other stuff (Olive music server mods, the new Signature 30 amp, etc.).

It really makes my afternoon when I poke me head in here and see many happy customers. And yes, for those who have less than 200+ hour of burn-in on their iMods....JUST WAI -- IT GETS BETTER!

If you want to speed up the burn in, connect it to your preamp or amp and play music on repeat mode all day and night (connected to the ac adapter so you don't kill the battery). The amp does not need to be turned on, but the iPod needs to be connected to it AND playing music. This will allow current to flow through those BG caps...which is required for the burn in.

Thanks again, everyone!

Vinnie

Gee Vinnie, what do you do to Olive Music Servers? I'd buy one of those if they would support Apple Lossless...

I don't believe the 44.1khz refers to the frequencies in the same sense as 20hz-20khz.

Hi Skylab,

Check it out:
http://www.redwineaudio.com/Olive.html

They are in the process of being compatible with Apple Lossless. All that is needed is a software change (and I guess some paper signing between Olive and Apple).

Cheers!
