Grado GS-1000's or Shure E500's?

I know, I know. Before you even think it, one is a headphone and the other an IEM. Other than that, from a sound perspective how do they compare? Hey TODD (TTVJ TODD), JUDE, SUGARFRIED, TYLL and any others who've tested them both out, I'm talking to YOU! As usual, I'm not looking for a better/worse comparison, but rather what they each sound like where their sounds converge/diverge. Head-fiers unite and demand impressions! You have nothing to lose, and a case of upgraditis to gain!!!

Frankly, there is only one option: buy both

In that case, I'll make you a deal. I'll buy the GS-1000's, and you buy the E-500's for me! You can come borrow them whenever you like (hell, it's only a 4 hour drive...)

I've already got the GS-1000's coming...so you take the E500's. But wait! After hearing the E500's...they are on their way too So um...you can just come over

having heard both in less than idea meet conditions for home listening I would go GS1000.
While I enjoyed the Shures they had too much bass slam for me and I like all kinds of rock but at the end of the day I found them unbalanced. If you like bass they are great though. The bass I heard was tight and well defined and did not obscure the mids or high frequency

by the time I get there I won't have anything left to share... I've liquidated 3 of my best items just to accumulate enough cash to pay for these w/o having my wife divorce me!

Isn't the E500 considerably cheaper than the GS-1000?

Not everyone can afford the GS-1000, but the E500 is, slightly less unaffordable.

In any case, the fact that I seem to prefer full sized cans to IEMs would mean that the GS-1000 is more appealing to me.

E500s approximate full sized cans rather well actually. Something that many will appreciate. However, it is true, nothing slams hard like a full set of cans. In that case, the GS-1000's might be a more efficient gamble Perhaps beneficial is the right word there.

Regardless, both are priced relatively right. I think the E500's will go for $400-$500? Not too bad at all!

I'm going for the E500...I've grown fond of IEMs in general lately. Also, I'm very, very intrigued by the GS1k, but I'm not sure how I'd like the "immense" sound stage.

I think which you headphone you decide on will be determined by your expected usage. If you would like to have something you can take with you, isolates well yet still has a full-sized heaphone feel then there's no question the E500's are the way to go. If on the other hand you intend to only use them at home in a quiet environment then the GS-1000 might be more appropriate. For myself I slightly prefer my RS-1's to the E500's but if push came to shove and I could only have one headphone for all uses there's no doubt in my mind I would take the E500's.

For real? I would love to have the RS-1 sound from my Nano on the lawn mower. I may have to pre order!

The ER4-Ps do a fine job but I would like more bass.

The other problem with the foams (ER-4Ps) and the lawn mower is the small twigs on the lower branches can pull the headphones out, and on a hot day after the headphones have been on a long time they loose some of there ability to expand so they sound slightly thin at the end of the day.

How comfy are the rubber tips on the sures?

Can you lie(sp) down with the Sures in? With a soft pillow they sound like the ultimate bed headphone.

I must agree with Zanth. Gotta have both....or at least I do. Curiosity gets me every time.

Much like HD650's, K701 and RS-1's are all in the same league but very different sounding from each other you can now add an IEM, the E500's to that list so with that said I wouldn't say you'll be getting RS-1 sound from your Nano if you buy E500's, it will be E500 sound from your Nano and that's not a bad thing at all.

Trying using the hearing protectors that look like cheap plastic closed headphones. I put these on over my E4's when I'm out cutting the grass and they do a great job of adding an extra level of isolation for me but should also serve to protect the headphones and keep them from getting caught on things in your situation.

The various tips are all reasonably comfortable but I think most will prefer the sound using the yellow foamies.

Yes lying down is fairly easy with the E500's in particular because they are shaped to be fairly much flush with your ear so lying down doesn't affect them much at all.

Arent' they the same foamies/ grey/black balls / 3-flanges as what you get now with E3cs thru e5cs. And I'm curious about the form factor /bulk/weight also, with metallic casing.

First production runs: are there any concerns about Shure QC, like with Apple macbook pros, where they're still trying to make laptops that won't scorch your lap.

I haven't found any very good pictures, aside from the deliberately darkened pix on headphone.com. Well that's a lotta ?s
