Help: Grado SR60 vs. Portapro

Hey all,

It's me again

Like I said before, I'm looking to get some entry-level headphones to hold me out until I can get more expensive ones, upgrade my source, and get an amp (meaning get more money!). I was looking at getting some relatively cheap, isolating earbuds ($20-$50), but I'm pretty much tired of using buds. Man did my ears hurt after using earbuds last night...ouch. My cheapo computer phones now have this buzz in the left side...you can't hear it when the music is loud, but it's there and I think it's slowly driving me insane.

I think I've succumbed to the fact that there aren't many good sounding closed phones in the $50-$70 range I'm looking at right now. I'm going to use these for portable use with a PCDP and home use with my computer, without an amp, so the Grado SR-60 and Koss Portapro look like the best bets too me. You can check my profile for my sources and music preferences. Anyone who's used these have suggestions? Comfort is an issue - I'd like to be able to listen to these for a while without my ears bleeding (curse those cheap earbuds).

Thanks!

Hmm, I'd say go for the sr-60s. Most of your preferences are pretty upbeat, etc.

another choice would be some sennheiser HD-497's

The senn. 280pro would be a closed phone option. You may be able to pick-up used close to your budget limit. Though it really could use an amp. But then again, all phones mentioned, would benefit from an amp.

If you wanna go 'cheap', the porta pro is hard to beat. With the 50% off deal, it'll be about $30 bucks shipped.

If you're really just looking for something to hold you over, I would definitely go with the PortaPros. They offer incredible sound for the price, especially considering that with the half-price sale, they're only $30 including shipping!

Ah, ok, so you have the intent of upgrading(sorry, missed that). Then by all means, get the portapros. For $30, you can do a LOT worse. Heck, not sure if you can better, lol.

the porta pros are a big step up from the POS that come bundled with ALL CD/MD/Cassette portables.

A real nice "first" headphone.
Hell I had two pairs until day before yesterday when my friggin dog got hold of one,i STILL have no clue where one earcup is.Probably buried out in the yard somewhere

Have you been checking poochie's poopie? Maybe he/she ate it. I'm being serious here. It can cause serious problems for your dog.

On another serious issue, what are your plans for the 'lone earcup? I recently started having problems with one of my drivers in my portapro. So if you want to part with it for a small fee...

Have you looked into the Sony V6's?

At this rate I just may need the spare

As for "poochies" health,if I don't kill the SOB he will be fine. The POS is a chewer not a swallower.
You know that little foam ring that goes between the cup and the transducer ?

I'm still fiding bits all over the house. The little pr*ck does this kinda crap after everyone goes to bed.And yeah, partially my fault too.I know better than to leave stuff like that where jerky can get at it.

But I was starting to have problems with that side (no damn wonder with all the limbs ripping them from my head mtn.biking) so I detached that side , was going to solder it back ,got sidetracked and the rest is history

I just want the damn earcup itself back ! I can always replace the transducer--the part is standard in about five different Koss headphones
But my sets are Radio Shack branded and this model is no longer made.

some would say "so Rick , what's the big deal man ?"

The BIG deal is the two pairs were setup to SOUND different !

Pair A is bone stock , overly heavy bass , bumped up highs ,
EXACTLY WHAT I WANT TO HEAR AT TIMES !

Pair B had the Radio Shack leatherette pads over the foam pads.Really smooths out the frequncy response.

So in reality two different cans altogether.

oh well

rickcr42.

Thanks for the reply. I thought I'd give it a shot. I guess I'll see how good Koss'es lifetime guarantee is.

Cut poochie some slack. I'm sure he's a goodboy.

puppyslugg: 50% off? That sounds like a real good deal but now I'm being tempted by that link...the Grados are calling me...LOL

Plus with an SR-80, that leaves room for improvement with an amp. Gah...I'm still not sure what to get. I'll think it over in the morning; that always gives me a new perspective. I've made many a purchase in the night when I was tired only to wake the next day and wonder what in the world I was thinking.

Thanks for the help.

Ha! LOL! How many of us have done this?!!

Congrats on your self restraint. And if I may... the PortaPro's at half-price are a fantastic value. You will never regret spending the 30 clams. You may eventually get higher-end cans, but the Koss' will probably always have a place in your heart. BTW, they do scale nicely with a modest amp, especially with a resistor in the mix (ie. a Fixup cable or 120ohm f/PortaCorda).

Good luck!
