I won't laugh, I'd buy one of your DAPs, too. Though I'd like titanium instead of steel or aluminum.

However, I dare say flashlights are considerably simpler and therefore cheaper to make. Most of the current LED-lights have tube bodies, which do not require expensive CNC-equipment, for example, and which can be made by small enthusiast companies/individuals. Sure-Fire also has military contracts, that's a lucrative market which is not open for DAPs, I suspect.
I'd be willing to save for a while and pay somewhere between $2,000 to $3,000 for a perfect DAP. But would that be sufficient?

Titanium! I forgot all abut that metal... seems Titanium is really hyped up these days, through movies and games etc., Maybe my Dream DAP would be made out of Tungsten? I'd like to see that happen, hehheh, the properties of Tungsten may present some problems though...

Ti is hyped, no doubt about that. Still, I prefer it over aluminum, as I like
the look of uncoated metal, and uncoated aluminum can give dirty fingers, I believe. Steel is great too, but depending on the size of the machine it could turn out quite heavy. On the other hand it would be far more scratch resistant. Tungsten sounds interesting, you don't see that often, at least not in everyday products. Heavy, I believe, but strong. I guess this is mostly a matter of personal preferences, each material has its pros and its cons.

I wish there was a custom DAP-industry like there is a custom knife industry - hundreds or thousands of individual makers, who listen to your wishes and give you a choice of materials and features, and who sometimes even will work after your own drawings.

Besides the usual amenities, show me one player:

that will play lossless files

that has infra-red remote capability

Answer: None

I could make a long list of things I'd like, but it's amazing to me that I can list just two things that no player in the world has in one package.
sony, kenwood, and the other usual supects were making portable cd players (not jsut mathematecially losless, but total cd quality sound) that came with ir removtes int eh early and mid 90's. the idea was garbage: read on

the players were of course awsome for sq, and the convienvce of a remote also great. the problem came when yoru remotely controlled player was in your bookbag and well, you get the point.

Not at all. I have two 1997 Panasonic players and I've put them through a considerable amount of abuse and they still work perfectly... astheics are another matter.

If I'm going to pay $300+ for a portable audio device it better last long. I can't stand having to shell out that type of money every 2 years.
