Which would sound better?

I am currently uprgrading my source on a pretty tight budget (~$200). I have a question on what would be a better investment.

Would I be better of buying an old PCDP (have a D-303 in mind), or would I be better off getting a dedicated home CDP? Note: I would not use the PCDP for portable use so that is not an issue.

And if I would be better off getting the home CDP, could you recommend me some good ones within my price range?

I bought a portable sony d-ne20, a top end model and although good for a portable even an old hifi separte £60 cd player blew it out the water....esp in the midrange.

You can get really good hi-fi cdp for around £200 - NAD, Cambridge Audio etc etc.

Cheaper than that you could go for Sony CDP-XE270, CDP-XE370, which u can get for around £80-90 at amazon. They are good for the money....a friend has a xe370 and is pretty impressive considering its price, and being sony it will probably last too. Even at this price range you will beat any portable hands down in terms of dynamic range etc.

If you can find a Sony CE-595, I would suggest that you give it some consideration. It is a nice unit for a good price. And it gives you the option of playing SACD's if you so desire.

I'll never cease to advice it
get a Shanling s100
(and mod it to your preference after ..)
the first mod is an easy opamp-swap that doesn'ìt involve any solder , only removing the top cover
worth , worth , worth

ahh finally someone interested ..
do a search on google , Shanling s100 mkII ; there's a nice basic review on Audiogon which carry out their differences ..
summary , they're both musical units , they both result in a musical and entertaining presentation .

The s100 mkII does better what the s100 mkI do well . Better bass, better air , less harshness , nicer stage ... better. Once modded is a killer competitor , I swear it .
I'm not of the Shanling crew , but the player deserves to be known , and I stand by the fact it's one of the most underrated bargain around .

I am also intrigued by this Shanling player. I like the idea of getting a very good budget source with the ability to uprgrade and mod as money will allow. A couple questions about this player. Is there any place other than ebay that you could acquire this player? And I read that this is the same as the Music Hall cd 25, is that true?
