Stupid Question-Rat Shack vs. anything under $30

The title says it all--I hook up a 5G iPod to my amp (headphone out) using a cheap Radio Shack cable; I hear less treble when amped and more bass, but I've always chalked that up to changes in amping. I've seen those Dragon cables, Zu, etc. but those are all $75+. Is there a cable under $30 that can readily improve on the Rat Shack and that is readily available (aka: Circuit City, Best Buy)? Or would I get a better improvement by buying a dock/line-out adapter/radio remote for my iPod?

You would almost certainly get much more out of a lineout -> amp rather than simply changing the cable going from headphone out -> amp. The headphone out on the 5G especially is terrible.
