Pre-Power Combo? Dual Mono? *confused*

i was on Xin's forum for the super macros and there it said in a later version V8, it'll have two amps together in one package as a pre power combo set up, but you can also do it now with two separate amps.

my question is, what is it exactly and how does it improve the sound? And is 2 amps combo together excessive for IEMs?

There are two amplification stages in most headphone amplifiers. There is a voltage gain stage, which Xin calls the preamplifier stage, where the amplitude of the original signal is increased to a level large enough to produce adequate sound from the headphone, and the current output stage which Xin calls the amplifier stage, where the current required to physically move the headphone driver is provided. In most headphone amplifiers, these are powered by a single power supply, in essence allowing the potential for one to interfere with the supply to the other. By using two amplifiers with only one of the stages in each, you are completely seperating the signal and power supply paths to reduce any possible interference to a minimum.

That's the theory. The fact that it isn't done even in the most expensive headphone amplifiers tells you something. It may or may not make a difference, however there are better ways to improve your sound for double the money in headphone amplification.

Most of the higher end Rudistor amps are full mono setups:
RPX33 (dual)
RP010/RP010B (dual)
RP1000 (quad)
In fact, given the price (very GS-1 like) I'd even consider the RPX33 in the upper mid-range.

Dual power supply simply isn't twice the money: it only requires a second power supply + circuit, which most of the time isn't where the real costs are.
To power a couple of speakers you can do very nice things with a headamp and a couple of mono blocks like the Corda poweramp-1 or with a dual mono poweramp like the RR20.

But yes, I consider power amps a bit overkill for a couple of IEMs.

I don't think the OP was really asking about dual mono, as was simply a little confused by the term. Pre - Power combinations are twice the price as they require two completely discrete amplifiers. Especially the Xin version, whereby two complete amplifiers are used, with each one bypassing either the pre or the power stages.

Most high end amps are dual mono, however none that I know of are made up of seperate pre and power sections each with their own power supplies.
