Mono Jack vs Stereo Jack

Hello, I am currently looking to purchase some XLR to 1/4" cables to connect microphone to sound card.

First, am looking for Female XLR? I've not bought the mic yet, so I want to make sure.

Second, what is the difference between 1/4" stereo and 1/4" mono?

For instance those two products:

The Mono is actually more expensive. I -think- that the Creative X-Fi Elite Pro breakout box can take both type.

Thanks.

A stereo plug will include information from both the left and right channels. A mono plug will only include information from the left channel. But, if your source is standard mic, you only need a monoaural connection. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Tip-Ring-Sleeve is stereo, mono hasn't ring.

a stereo plug has 3 segments on the finger of the connector, the mono plug only has two.

the upper most tip segment is the left channel, the middle segment is the right channel and base is the sleeve.

on a mono plug you just have the tip segment and the base. No middle segment.
