Best CDP

I'm currently in the market to buy a new cdp and was wondering what everyone on Head-Fi thought was the best cd player for around $500. I've heard good things about the Marantz CD 6000 OSE, the Cambridge Audio CD500 SE, and the NAD C541. Any input would be greatly appreciated. I'll also need to buy some ics, so what are some good ics that aren't too expensive? Thanks

MikeR17, I guess you answered it. The ones you listed are usually recommended in this price range.
Search the forums, we've been talking about this over and over.

Ive got the Marantz CD6000 OSE and should say it is a very good value.

MikeR17,

I've auditioned many players in the sub-$1000 range, and my favorite that I've heard is still the Sony SCD-C333ES SACD/CD player (even just as a CD player).

I think for about that price you can get the Tjoeb Aha! which has gotten rave reviews at Audioreview and audioasylum. You can get it from Kevin at upscale audio. I just bought my Cary cdp from him and he was a pleasure to work with.

OK, thanks Jude and holderlin. What I'm really looking for are people who might have auditioned all of these cd players and know what differences there are between them. Also, I'm looking for any additional players that I might not know about yet that are considered to have great sound. I know there are a lot of interconnects out there too, but would anyone be willing to recommend some good interconnects <$150? Thanks--

The MIT MI-330+ seems like a good interconnect for that price, Mike (at audioadvisor.com)

The ones I've auditioned fairly extensively are:
  • Denon DCM-370
  • NAD C541
  • NAD C540 (discontinued now, I think)
  • Rotel RCD-951
  • Marantz 6000 OSE (which I've quite recently had a chance to hear again)
  • Rega Planet 2000
  • Arcam Diva CD72
  • Arcam 7SE
  • Sony SCD-C333ES
I've heard several others, but not with a headphone amp and headphones. The above I've auditioned with headphone amp and headphones.

I have some brief notes. I'll dig 'em up, although I probably don't need them, as I remember my opinions of them fairly well. I'll be back with them.

that would be great man!

I've heard a lot of these at different times (and read about even more ). Like Jude, if you're going to spend $500 or so, I would wholeheartedly recommend the 333ES SACD player. You should be able to get one for around $525 or $550 ($1200 retail).

Thanks a lot for all of the fast responses! Judging at what Jude said and MadDEF, it appears that the best cd player of those listed would be the Sony 333ES SACD player. Thanks and do you know of any good sites that sell them for around $550? Thanks again and I'll try to do some more research on the interconnects.

I believe Oade Bros. sells it for $550 -- but you have to ask them for that price. Their shipping cost is about $25, so it really comes out to about $575. Apparently, from what Macdef says, J&R will sell the 333 for even less if you mention that Oade regularly sells for $550.
