What I wonder is how the bass rolloff on the K501 affects timpani.
They don't have a big impact, but definitely convey deep bass with great accuracy. Tympani sounds quite detailed, although obviously there are better headphones for it (like the 580).

Well...my 501's arrived yesterday and I spent much of the night rediscovering some of my old music. I bought these to be my jazz/classical cans. They really get that right so far. I understand how people would charaterize these as bass shy, but it doesnt bother me in the least. I only have about 5 hours on mine and my amp is prob not quite strong enough to drive these with authority. If they loosen up with burn-in at all Im in heaven. Patricia Barber has never sounded so good. These cans are as close to my Magneplanar speakers as Ive come. Maybe the Maggies have trained my ears to not seek the bass thump. Who knows. Im very happy especially considering the price.

Sorry for the sextuple posts, guys! Six for one click....makes so sense.

Daashford, I forgot to add that the 501s need beaucoup burn in....I mean 300 hours or more. Search and see. Be patient and they will blossom, especially the bottom....so to speak!
