Recently I tried to clean out the gunk off the filter on my ER4 but the filter mesh broke off from the metal filter and it seems to be halfway or three quarters of the way down the tube. I tried to avoid changing the filters as there was some speculation that it might increase the chance of cracking the tube. Has anyone else had the same problem? I could try shoving sharp object down the tube to get it out but I'm a bit worried that I might poke something behind the filter and damage the speaker. I have emailed Etymotic for their advice as it's still under warranty but as I live in Australia I'm not too keen on sending it back if avoidable. Any suggestions?

All I have to say is that their awesome pair of headphones. Great sound stage, vocals are a bit too strong, you can feel the bass other than hearing it, and great for movies. Comfort is 4.5...

try the replacement tool they provided
the filter replacement tool was designed to remove these. the idea is that you puncture the filter with the tool to remove the existing one.good luck.

Yes, that is what the tool is for. Just send it back.
Thanks Guys. The replacement tool no longer works because the filter mesh has seperated from the metal housing and so it is too far down the tube for it to reach. I can only remove the metal housing with the tool (which I have). So far my attempts to remove the filter have just caused it to go further down the tube so I think I'll give up and let them take it out.
