Repetitive playlists with crappy songs, but worse than that are DJs. I think radio would be better without them... as long as they played stuff I wanted to hear. NPR is a lot less annoying and more entertaining than any music channel here.
ok, i give up.

Radio sucks because most DJs are mentally impaired. But so are most of the listeners, so I guess that's why it works out.

I'll give it another listen next time I'm in the car if that'll make you happy.

do whatever, bro. kexp has no commercials, doesn't repeat the same songs, and plays really interesting good music of all kinds except classical. just trying to point out there are good radio stations if you bother putting minimal effort into finding them, instead of giving up without trying.

Try listening to WXPN online as well - it's a great non-commercial music station, run out of Penn. www.xpn.org

The classical station is fine if I'm in the mood to hear it, otherwise I'd rather not hear the songs that were overplayed ten years ago overplayed today :P

A classical channel is one of the small joys in life really.

As for "mainstream" channels, witness the next phase in the evolution of radio: the powers that be are finding out that music, even crap music, is too expensive. Instead, they fill the airwaves with cheap labor -- brain-dead school dropouts, vituperative political commentators, cranky stock-market gurus. That's why portable mp3 players are such hot sales.

Radio almost always sucks because the people programming it are either lazy, greedy, or too stupid to do it with a personal touch, and with real care.

Most commercial radio is almost always lowest common denominator programming. There have been some rare exceptions - for instance REV 105 in Minneapolis - St. Paul, MN a number of years ago was fairly good at 'mixing it up' and playing really inspired alt. rock - but it sadly didn't last.

Minneapolis / St. Paul, MN now have a very good and eclectic public radio station that has turned me onto a lot of really good new and old music.

Lucky for everyone, they also stream 24/7.

They post their playlist more or less concurently, so you can find the name of the song and artist you heard 10 min. ago or several hours back, and weren't listening so closely to have caught the names...

Listen awhile, and see if you like it.

Another vote for NPR.

I stopped listening to radio back when Napster was barely coming out. I found Napster to have better music, even when picking and dl'ing at random, that the radio. Now, I listen to only NPR. The jazz and classical station play the same crap all the time. I love Beethoven, but I can only stand to listen to 5th piano concerto so many times in a week.

Hence for radio - I stick to NPR. For new music - well - I search.

Radio sucks. XM radio sucks even more. NPR is too damned liberal.

You guys must not be listening to Vinyl Tap with Randy Bachman of BTO and Guess Who fame.

Tonight he is covering guitarists. A couple weeks ago he did a show on sun studios. It is an amazing radio show. He plays great music and has tons of insightful information and stories.

It plays saturdays at 7:00 on CBC radio here in Canada.

I haven't listened to an Arbitron rated radio station in over 15 years.

I only tune in to stations left of 92.1
