RS1 and HP2... it took two hours...

But I finally warmed up to the HP2. God, for the first two hours it was like I had frigging cotton shoved in my ears and the RS1 on. Going back and fourth, I have to say that they're very "different strokes for different folks" as far as a preference goes. Were the HP2 a reasonable price, they'd really replace the need for my HD650... they sound a bit darker. Seem a bit fuller on the lower end too.

Of course, this is with bowls on the RS1 (my preference) and flats on the HP2. I'm gonna try the RS1 with flats next, and see if that's where the lower body is coming from. Haven't done that with them in a while, since I like the clarity and detail of the bowls so much.

Still, no matter what I compare the RS1 to,the sound of them always reminds me of staring at autumn leaves in a cold clear stream. Being primarily visual, I think I can break that image up like this:

Vibrant color and warmth: Red/Yellow Maple leaves.
Cold water moving: Crisp clear tone, nothing in the way... feels like very little separates you visually from the leaves.
Slight movement of water: Quick speed.

I'll do more impressions a bit later on, thanks again to jjcha for lending me the HP2 for the eve!

Nice initiall impressions. I know what you mean by the rs-1 description. So what do you prefer? I originally sold my hp-2 because they just didnt get my foot tapping as much as the rs-1 did. I do miss how accurate sounding they are but they just seemed some what "dull" to me.

RS-1's in the lead over the HP-1000's, david taking down golith isn't it? The HP-1000's seem to have a godly status around here. (I still really want to hear them though)

Glad to see they might be taken down a peg or two...hopefully the prices will fall too....

I'm not a fan of HP1000. I also prefer RS1 to them.

Ah, not my HP2. It's jjcha's. It goes home today. That punk has an HP1 AND an HP2 now though, through some shady stereo business deals!

I can't fully say I prefer one over the other, but the RS1 drew me back more. I always wanted to go "back" to it. I'd catch myself thinking "what does this sound like on the RS1?" but not really vice versa. The HP2 is, afterall, very flat.

As far as David taking down Goliath, I dunno. The HP1000 and the RS1 retailed for similar prices... and the RS1 is a product made after the HP1000, so I don't really think the sound quality is inferior. Though, the HP1000 is built so damned well. It's such a tank.

Interesting. Going mostly on memory from my last pair of HP2, and a 5-minute listening session last night with my latest pair, I prefer the HP2. I've owned the RS1 for several months now. My preference, however, is flats on both cans, which changes things up quite a bit. Here are my thoughts:

The HP2, to me is, is nearly grain free, which the RS1 cannot claim. Notes on the HP2 are struck with a greater sense of weight and palpability. Both have a good quantity of bass, but the HP2's is even tighter and snappier - rock solid. In midrange, the RS1 is slightly warmer and fuzzier, sure. The HP2 has, by comparison, what I'd consider a cool-ish (not cold) tint to its midrange tonality (this is probably what makes it sound so neutral to many people). Highs on the RS1 can be too harsh for me, even with my preferred flat pads. The HP2 has smooth and non-fatiguing highs.

I hope to do some more rigorous comparison in the next few days.

Heh, you want to try the Qualia for two hours? But it'll be like having frigging acid poured into your ears and the SA5k on.

Best,

Your Qualia threatens me with a knife whenever I visit and you leave the room.

Heh, yeah, I saw it practicing garrote techniques with the new cables I borrowed from ayt999... I think it's not happy the K 1000's come home.

Best,
