Im kind of a bass head, and this lack of bass when using the nano is just unacceptable for me.

Hopefully I wont have to return it
hi mate, i've got a nano too, i think the lack of bass is down to the headphones.

get some sennheiser px100 they have a tremendous bass even on the nano, i use mine with the nano

Sparky...no problem, been there.

Yea, I guess I'd be curious which amp is larger if at all between nano/shuffle.

The headphone amp circuitry is on the DAC chip. I'm not sure whether the earlier ones have it, but the 5g has an amp on the DAC capable of pushing a small speaker in mono. It's not utilized in the iPod.

See ya

^ Would this be proven w/ Rockbox? There is a 'mono' channel option, but it greatly reduces the sound quality...

No problem here either with bass on the Nano. I use PX100 and Super.fi 5Pro and no EQ. I have also used the AKG K27i with my Nano and the bass was deep, but a bit muddled.

I've never used a shuffle, but I've tried pretty much all the other ipods and I thought they were all lacking in bass. However, a set of UE 5 Pros will easily make up for that.

I have a 3G ipod which to mean sounds fantastic with my Grado Labs SR60's. My sister just got the nano and I was afraid it was going to be underpowered for my headphones, but to my surprice the bass response and quality was great. I have to say that I did have to crank the volume loud for the nano to power and headphones, but even then, in a crowded place with the open air design the thing sounded great, so great to my ears in fact that I am thinking of getting one. the other option I want to try is to get my hands on teh creative Zen Vision M and try that one with my headphones.

Just my 2 cents.

P.S. what kind of content do you listen to? What kind of music? what bit rate do you listen to? how do you like music, loud or low? etc? that can help you determine why you are not getting the sound you like out of the nano. It was mentioned on the thread somewhere that the nano and the G5 share some guts and that allows it (or should in therory) to produce decent sound. you can try different bit rates, even variable and crank the sound in the recording, then you may be happier with the results

Nano sounds fine with my E4s. Not quite as good as my Karma but still very good.

I use a Nano 1gig with the AKG K27i.

Plenty of deep bass, this set-up alone will be responsible for me enduring the gym, as it blocks out crappy music and allows me to enjoy the deepest drum 'n' bass and electro.

Love them to bits (Nano and phones).

The shuffle has a decent amount of bass to my ears.

The ipod video has OKish bass if you use a portable amp.
If not, I find it's bass to be underwhelming.

I haven't heard the Nano but the talk is that it is inferior to the first two ipods.

To be honest, I find every portable headphone setup I've heard to be bass shy - they simply can't compare to speakers.
I'm guessing that with a portable amp and very bass heavy IEMs or expensive full-size phones you could get quite decent bass respone.
With headphones and especially portable phones it seems to be something you really need to work at.

shuffle+superfi 5 pro=loads of fun bass imho

nano+superfi 5 pro=slightly less, but still plenty of pleasurable bass

Ummm... I'm no Apple lover, but the only headphones I've used that made me want more bass were my E4c. This has been rectified with a headphone amp. My KSC-75 and DT 770 each had ample bass with my iPod Nano.
