Nano Lacking in the BASS ?!

Thread Starter
Hey guys,

Question for ya, Ive got my HD485s hooked up to my newly aquired Nano, and there seems to be a definate lack of bass. When I plug the headphones into the computer or my stereo, tons of bass. Is the nano uncapable of power my headphones properly ? I was thinking of buying some portable phones, I.e ksc75, cx300, ep630, or something along those lines, think they would be any better? Im kind of a bass head, and this lack of bass when using the nano is just unacceptable for me.

Hopefully I wont have to return it

the only apple product that has bass is the 5G. When i listen to all my friends nanos all i hear is pop pop pop on my E4's.

Shuffle is the best in Bass of Apple iPod products. Do a search here for more info/impressions on the subject.

Or you can blame the phones, like ipodovers prefer to do.
The lack of bass in ipods (except the shuffle) and the resulting cold flat sound is what keeps me away from these player; sad, because they have very strong points too.
A (admittedly) short listen to the 5G with sen 497s didn't convince me either.

The Koss would work well, and through those you will not notice a difference between another portable and the Nano.

My UE Superfi5pro's give plenty of bass from my 4G.

Don't the 5G and Nano share the same DAC?

The Nano is fine with my E4's, wonder what the problem is you're encountering.

Op: It could be that the HD485 isn't getting enough power from the Nano, or that your computer and stereo aren't as straight as the Nano, and emphasise on the bass. I doubt it's the headphones not getting enough power, my Nano will even give my DT770Pro's some form of bass (though far from as good when properly amped).

Given it's portable size, I think the nano has astounding bass

What has size got to do with it? When you consider the Shuffle?

So the Shuffle has bigger bass than the Nano and can drive larger headphones? Seems odd.....

And the shuffle....?

...and the nano?? Care to elaborate?

My point is that due to portability you can only fit so much circuitry and amplification into so much space...there are limits...that's why many people use amps with there portables. The Shuffle is about 1/2 the size of the Nano so I find it odd that it would have more amplification.

But if you were to tell me that due to all of the extra menus and software in the Nano that the Shuffle, while being 1/2 the size, actually has MORE space for amplification circuitry....then that would be a logical explanation.

....communicate.

Either I didn't read your comment earlier or you've changed it. I didn't think you originally mentioned the shuffle in your earlier comment. My bad sorry. But patience my friend some of us have to wrestle toddlers to bed in the evening. 3 renditions of my porridge pot take a bit of time.

The point is (by popular concensus) the Shuffle isn't bass deficient, (if you're a basshead you might disagree) and can drive full sized cans. I've see a lot of small flash players in the gallery threads used with full sized cans. I guess it would depend on the exact cans and player you are talking about. There was a thread earlier about the new apple remote (nano compatible) driving headphones much better than the earphone out. Maybe thats your answer.
