I just received a delivery notice at home today, 13 days after shipment. And, to add insult to the injury of my longer-than-average wait, Canada Post is dinging me for $19.80 in taxes/duty!!!

I'll find out the details tomorrow when I pick it up, but right now I'm feeling a little hard done by...

I don't consider 20 dollars to be too bad considering the amp cost $250US. I've been hit for 40 dollars in brokerage on an item that cost $70US.

Having had a similar experience in the past myself, I wouldn't consider it too bad, either, if not for the fact that at least 2 other Canucks (Canon and toastmaster) weren't charged a cent, and received their units much quicker, to boot.

No fault of Jan's, I suspect, just the ridiculous arbitrary crap-shoot that is Customs.

Too true. It's really hit or miss as to whether or not they charge duties on it. Sometimes someone is just having an angry day, I guess. Or they may have quotas, who knows? I don't really agree with paying duties on something that isn't made in sold in Canada.

That said, I've had to pay much higher duties on much cheaper things. Jan declares a fairly low value so that helps you out quite a bit.

That also said, the extra $20 is well worth it. I'm enjoying mine right now and would gladly have paid the Lizzie.

Echoing others, you're lucky all you got nailed for is 20$ --- at a minimum, you ought to have been charged GST/PST for the total in CAD funds, about 40$ CAD, along with a 5$ handling fee. Duty/brokerage charges are a whole other ballgame. You got off cheap. Also, it's probably customs you ought to blame for the delay. They probably couldn't find the price in the books and kept it until they divined an arbitrary dollar value and charged you for it!

Just a quick update... I picked up my HEADFIVE earlier today (Thursday). Thankfully, Jan had set the declared value of the amp at only €75 (he actually told me in our correspondence that he was going to do so) which Customs converted to $105.86 CAD.

7% GST (it cleared on June 28, so I didn't get the benefit of the 1% drop on July 1) + 7% PST + $5.00 handling fee = $19.82. As others have rightfully pointed out, it could have been worse, though Canon's and toastmaster's experiences had led me to hope that I wouldn't be charged at all.

FWIW...

Kind of a raw deal that you got charged. If it helps, I've been burned by customs enough times in the past that I concider the free border crossing of my Headfive to be well-deserved.

In any case, I can't say that it's worth it enough times. Hope you're enjoying it.
