for spending so much on "just headphones"?

I'm about to buy the e4c in 14 days and I asked my friends for their opinion, and they say I shouldn't spend that much.. max $40.

What about your stories?

Yep... that just goes with the hobby.

No kidding. And in most cases they are absolutely right. The fun part is learning to tune them out.

Oh yeah... the more polite people give me weird looks, while my roommate insists that I'm insane. She's refusing to go past the $20 headphones. That wouldn't be so bad (after all, everyone has their own priorities) but she's unwilling to listen to mine *for free* o_O

Agreed, but the same can be said of any hobby, really, can't it?
I know people who spend thousands every year on going to football (soccer) matches. I love watching football, but I'd never spend half my disposable income on it. Same can be said for things like motoring, fashion, stamps.... all of them can have huge amounts of money sunk into them.

For me its like "why all the headphones?","do you really need to spend that much?","$100...WHAT?". Then il let them have a listen and from them on its "Can i borrow your headphones for a bit.....please?"

Don't really tell them at all how much they cost because i know their reaction. The only one i would tell is another in the same position

Heck YES!!
I'm even afraid to let my gf knows how much it really costs, otherwise it will be more than name-calling!!

Well I am no stranger to expensive hobbies. One of my other hobbies is RC GAS Monster Trucks. I've got about $900 in that hobby.

Yep, I always get the same suggestion; You only need one set of headphones, everything else is just a waste of money!

I don't tell people how much my stuff costs...it would be too hard to explain.

But I do usually let them have a listen, and then gently encourage them to purchase a PX100 or ER-6i

I get it, even though my headphones are "only" $100

I'd rather spend 100 on headphone stuff than DVds (Used to be the other way around before head.fi)

oh yes most definitely...

some people think I'm mad... but oh well, usually they are shocked when i tell the price )thats where they think i've gone crazy) and even more shocked when they listen to them ... they usually understand after they listen...

Oh great, now Head-Fiers think I'm insane too.

(going to World Cup)

Its all a matter of what people think is worth spending a lot of money on. I had some friends come over, and when they see my 24" Dell 2405 LCD monitor they think its great and when I tell em how much it is they nod. But when they ask how much my headphones or any of my audio gear is, they are shocked. My favorite is when I tell them how much the Zu Mobius Cable is.
