The Long Hair Mod

Thread Starter
To preface this, I would like to state that I, like any other self-respecting, college-aged, jam-base regular, have shoulder length hair (that looks darn good, I might add ). I have also been listening to my music exclusively on my freshly acquired HD-555s (a big thanks to legolocker) for the last month or so.

I just today found an incredible phenomenon. For the entire duration I've had my headphones I've been placing them directly over my hair, matting it down to my head and creating a small filter between the drivers and my ears. I imagine this filter gives the same effect you might get from switching the pads on Grado headphones. When I brush it out from under the headphones I notice a clearer, brighter sound, and when I leave my hair down the sound is darker and more resonant (especially bass-wise). Could this be a new cheap alternative to expensive pads and bowls?

This has me wondering if any other Head-Fiers have experienced this, and what your preferences are.

Short-cropped hair does the trick better for me.

That's brilliant! I never thought of that (long hair) as an advantage until now. Maybe I should let my hair grow as well?!

I just noticed the same thing a couple of days ago, except that in my case I have earlobe-length hair. Keeping hair out of the earpads makes everything sound nice and clear, and leaving it under the pads makes vocals sound fuzzy. Everything else stays exactly the same.

That was the first "Mod" listed in the Team Girl-Fi handbook

I always brush my hair behind my ears or tie it back when I'm listening on headphones. Hair over my ears is annoying but I've noticed the effect you're speaking of.

I always pull my hair away from my ears when using headphones, but just for fun, I just tried this with my dreadlocks and DT770, and the effect is quite different. The treble is more prominent (not good with these phones), mids are slightly veiled (I wonder why?), but most importantly, the lows are tamed a bit. It actually helps with certain bass-heavy tracks, makes them less headache-inducing while retaining the extension to those lower frequencies. I think I might have stumbled upon something here...

Am I the only one that finds this "technique" too uncomfortable to bother with?

But, But, But... I'm going bald

I shave my entire head with a #2 blade every two weeks. Headphones fit much better.
