Man, that Racer 5 is great stuff! I haven't had the pleasure of trying the Hop Rod Rye, but I'm sure it's great as well. Bear Republic is producing some really fine beers.

Anyway, back on-topic. My solution to your set-up dilemma would be to get everything done BEFORE the first bottle is cracked. Imposing arbitrary enjoyment restrictions on your first session with that awesome amp makes absolutely no sense, to me anyway. I'm envious.

John is the one that turned me on to the Racer 5 and Hop Rod Rye. The description on the bottle of HRR is "Hop Rod Rye is a high performance, turbo charged, alcohol burnin' monster ale with the dual overhead hop injection, made with 18% rye." I will say this, they are not kidding. It is everything they say it is.

Back OT, great suggestion, if it was only possible.

There was a short review of the Moth 2A3 (not as a headphone amp) and a shoot out between various 2A3 tubes in Issue 12 (summer 1999) of Vacuum Tube Valley magazine. The reviewer bought the amp.

I got a chance to listen to John's Moth S2A3 and it's as good as he said it is. I didn't spend a lot of time as I was busy setting up my turntable. The pictures of the Moth do not do it justice, it is beautiful in person. John's version has the Moth logo etched into the case because it was the prototype that was sent out to be reviewed. The regular production models had as metal plate with the logo that was attached to the top of the amp.

Much congrats on the new amp and joining the Moth family. I just took delivery of my Si2A3/45 and it's amazing. That's one rare piece of gear for sure.

Pic's! Please.

I'll post some pics soon, hopefully in a couple days. So far my favorite tubes are the Emission Labs 45's, but the AVVT Mesh 2A3's are very nice as well.

I second, pics when you can will be appreciated by these eyes too. I concur that Emission Labs makes absolutely incredible sounding tubes; my EML 2A3-s are phenomenal. Glad to know, the EML-45s are treating your ears well.

Congrats on owning a great amp, and joining the Moth brotherhood. I am the proud owner of one of the tiny handful of Moth Si2a3H amps that Craig created somewhat in the interim between Moth closing down and Eddie Current becoming fully operational.
Mine was the protype for the others and is a fabulous amp. Roughly a year ago, Elrod-Tom, Jude, Tuberoller, and a few others got to audition it at the special, "Snowstorm In April" meet here in Detroit. At that time, it wasnt fully tweaked with optimal tubes. It's significantly better sounding these days and has awed everyone who has heard it since.
While the quality of the 2a3 tubes are, as previously discussed, very important, dont neglect the others. I am running some superb Mullards in every other socket, and the sound is remarkably improved, and different.

I've been considering picking up some Emission Labs 2a3's, and Craig most highly recommended the AVVT Meshplates, but availability and pricing on those is simply insane. Again, congratulations on owning a wonderful amp.

As a bonus, my Si2a3H drives K1000's beautifully from the headphone output too!

Kentamcolin?

Where ARE you finding sources for AVVT's and are the prices even remotely affordable? Any idea whether the same source has 2a3's?

I have a dream of someday tracking down a Moth Xana... anyone have any idea of how many were made? I don't think any head-fi'ers own one.

I believe no more than 4, but I would need to double check with Craig. Yet I do know that each of the original Xana purchasers is still in possession of those (100+ lbs) Xana headphone amps. And, even though, they have received a few offers over the years to purchase for at minimum what they paid, if not more, none of them has parted with their Xana because it is the best sounding headphone amp they have ever heard as the legend has it.

I've been enjoying jp11801's S2A3 amp for the last couple of days. This is one of the best headphone amps I've heard. The only problem is that it is huge and definitely not passing the wife acceptance test.

If you are interesting in purchasing the AVVT Mesh 2A3, this is a required read:

I remember reading that AVVT may have spawned into Emission Labs (as one of the partners to this newer venture).

But the question should be have you worked your way into their will or living trust so that they can bequest you their Xana, but what if you predecease the testator?
