Attenuator that doesn't degrade quality

I've been using the Shure attenuator with my Westone UM2's and found the attenuator degrades the sound quality quite significantly, especially when the volume is turned down. The sound becomes very rolled off w/ muddy bass when the volume is reduced by the attenuator. Even with the volume in the max. position, there is a slight veiling of the sound.

Is there such thing as an attenuator that does not degrade quality as much? I think etymotic or some other brand had an inline attenuator, but would this still have a similar effect (just not adjustable)?

Almost all my sources are too loud for my UM2s. Everything from a Panasonic Portable DVD player, my Pocket PC, Grace 901, and Benchmark DAC1.
I can understand the Grace and Benchmark being too powerful, but my Pocket PC is too loud on even the lowest volume!

i liked the etymotic P-to-S adapter - it has a 75 ohm resistor in there and might help you out. it even improved SQ for me after amping it, with some koss clips!
