How would you build a rig around this sound signature (details inside) for ~$2-3k? - Page 2

From your description, I will have to recommend the L3000. The L3000 has warm tonality with excellent midrange, bass, and details. The leatherhead is now difficult to come by and usually command b/w 1.8K to 2.2K. absolutely love my L3000 + SDS + Sony SCD-777ES w/ Kern Mods combo.

If you want to stay within the budget, I would recommend the HD-650 w/ Zu cable and MPX-3 amp. The HD-650 to my ears are highly enjoyable and definitely come close to my main rig at a much lower pricetag.

I understand Behringer makes a very high quality line of equalizers that would meet you needs at a compartively minimal expense.

i agree with oski. keep your STAX rig, and invest in an HP2 with the right amp to drive it, and you'll never be bored - an electrostatic rig and a dynamid rig to cover any mood you'll ever have! well, other than the "i want to listen to sucky sound" mood
