that is a safety light to signal to other pilots flying below of the helicopters presence. you can see the other lights on the tips of the tail fin. they are usually red and green or blue.

Had a B1-B bomber go over my house so low it was rattling dishes in the cabinets and even though I knew it was coming (the guy asked permission to buzz my town because his dad lived there on the way to the Newburg air strip and it was granted
) was not prepared to photograph it.
As big and loud as it is it was ON ME without warning and by the time I recovered my wits (if ever
) and tried to take a photo it was vapor !
I turn to my wife pissed that i missed the oppurtunity and the pr*ck does a second pass !
Obviously I was less prepared to click the shot but matter not anyway.I still have the mental picture and always will of this magnifico bird buzzing the treetops and rattling my world.
BTW-it is more than obvious from the opening pic that the old expression of "when pigs fly" needs to be updated to have some actual meaning
