Congrats on the new amp.

My favorite gain tube is the Sylvania VT-231 followed by the Tung-Sol 6SN7GT. I may be in the minority on this but I also really like the EH 6SN7 as a gain tube, it doesn't have a ton of warmth but it's quiet and has great exention.

For the output I like the Tung-Sol 5687s. When I run the MPX in the standard configuration I like the Tung-Sol 6SN7GT for the output, I use this combination mainly for classical music so I like the clean and precise sound of the Sylvania VT-231 / Tung-Sol 6SN7GT combination.

While you're waiting on the 5687 adapters you should consider getting a pair of 6BL7s. To my ears they have similar attributes as the 5687 without the need for the adapter.

I ordered a custom MPX3 Slam as well, I guess outsiders (I'm From Israel) are delayed or have low priority ? probably not but who knows.
Anyway its weekend here, and the amp is at the customs I think, next week (probably sunday or monday) I hope to get it, at last !!!
All those thread with WOW in them really makes my expectations go higher and higher
Could be that export orders take a longer time, as I am in Singapore and ordered a custom MPX3 Slam as well. However, the good news is that I received mail last night that a tracking number will be available Monday.
Fingers crossed!

Tubes--Good values?

I'm a sucker for good value (which is why I chose the HD580s over the 600s). With the understanding that tastes vary widely, what tubes will provide a really big bang for the buck?

I've been looking around for some of the tubes mentioned in this thread (as well as others), but it's impossible for me to know whether tube A (at $60) will provide significantly better sound than tube B (at $30). Is there any conventional wisdom on this subject?

Hmm well.. there are various tube out there. Tung Sol D Getter, Sylvania 5687, Raytheon 5687, etc... Alsot of good choices out there. You have an octal default sockets, so you can use 6BX7GTs and 6BL7GTs, those are fairly good and fairly cheap. The 6BX7GTs are alot easier to find than the BL7GTs. That said no there really sin;t a set criteria, alot of it goes into system synergy and personal preference so a blanket standard really doesn't apply at all.

Took a long time to finally show itself but it turn out to not be that bad of a tube.It sounds a little bright for me so that moved me to find something different.

I don't think the EH sound bad by any means; it is just that so many other tubes (old stock) are sounding better. The EH are clear sounding, uncomplicated and straight to the point. The upper mids can be a bit harsh and accentuated, but the highs are good. Ultimately, they do not have the finesse and class of the old stock tubes IMO. However, not all old stock tubes sound very good either. Especially post 1950 varieties. I have, e.g. these GE JAN-CLRV-6SN7GTs from 1964 that do not sound particular good, to say the least. I rather use the EH then.

If there is a tube with particular loud bang for the buck, it would be, IMO, the very early RCA 6SN7GTA. But you have to like the RCA sound of course.

I am waiting on my second PPX3-Slam, only this time I got the Black Gate option. I will be using the 6sn7 for gain, and Mikhail is also sending me a 6cg7 adapter. I spoke with him yesterday, and he said it should be ready to ship by the middle of next week. So in all, the wait will turn out to be 2 weeks, which isn't bad at all.

For me to buy a second Slam, it just shows you how awesome sounding they are!

Congrats on the new amp. The most pleasure I have gotten using headphones has always been with the Singlepower amps. Now we need someone to take the plunge and get a balanced MPX3 slam made.

Congrats on your amp! I've had my MPX3 for a couple months now and have been doing a lot of tube rolling. The tubes you use definitely make a big difference in this amp. I've been amazed at how it can take on a completely different sound, just by switching out a tube.

Unfortunately, tube advice has been difficult for me to find since I use RS-1s instead of the Sen 600 or 650 which most MPX3 users here seem to have. However, regardless of your headphones, I'd definitely suggest checking out some various 6SN7 tubes. Tung-Sols, Sylvania's and RCA's all good rep.

With my headphones, using the RCA 6SN7 as the driver and two Sylvania 5687's for outputs is the best combination I've found. If I was using Senns, I'd suspect that the Tung-Sol 6SN7 driving two Sylvania 6SN7s or two Tung-Sol 5687s would be a pretty sweet combination. Using a 6BL7 drving two 5687s is also worth trying.

Keep playing around with different tubes. You'll know it when you find the right combo for you!
