Well I'm glad the discussion has perked up on this one, but as I said my reasoning was regarding sound quality. I compared my squished down pads to a pair of new ones and the difference between the placing of the driver relative to the ear between the new and old ones, as a percentage of the total distance is very signficant indeed.

I was surprised to hear a difference in sound, but then why shouldn't it sound different if you are changing the relationship of the driver to the ear.

I let the pads on my HD580s get big-time squishy before I replaced them the first time - and was stunned at the effect. Bass response, in particular, had suffered badly over time without my being aware of it. I assume this is due to a deteriorating seal as the pads wear down.
