But let me make this suggestion, by far the best, most comprehensive "New Wave"/alterna-pop/proto alterna-rock/accessible post-punk compilation series is Rhino's Just Can't Get Enough series. There are over a dozen titles in this series and they are cram-packed with great tunes from the early 80s, and spare you all the cheesy stuff (for the most part). Sound quality is first-rate as well. They originally came out in 1994 and are getting hard to find now, but well worth tracking down in your local used CD store. Great stuff!
Theres also the living in oblivion series of cds

If you want some great underrated bands or maybe just some less known bands with one hit in the US but have great albums nonetheless try the Care/wild swans, china crisis, lotus eaters, camouflage, the smiths, morrissey, anything box, aha believe it or not has pretty good albums too especially minor earth. There are many. It just depends if you like dark dm or bouncy devo, I can recommend you a lot of bands depending on your exact taste but if the mainstream 80s is what you want, definitely start with the compilation discs like the just can't get enough and/or living in oblivion series of cds

No one likes Level 42? Hall & Oates? Spandau Ballet? Van Halen? Phil Collins?

Phil Collins rocks. I like a lot of his solo stuff better then his days with Genesis.

I have to admit, I also enjoy some of Debbie Gibson's early singles. Consider her age then, her songs are great.

I'm So Excited - Pointers Sisters
Everytime You Go Away - Paul Young (covering a Hall & Oates song)
Running With The Night - Lionel Richie
I Can't Drive 55 - Sammy Hager
Careless Whisper - Wham!
Room To Move - Animotion
Missing You - John Waite

It's the MTV pop that probably gets ya... unfortunately that seems to be the most well-remembered stuff from the 80s. There was indeed a lot of crap, but I'd bet nowhere near the crappiness of most pop being released these days.
