My HD25 Aluminum ear pads should arrive tomorrow, says UPS. Will report back all manner of placebo effects once I've had some time with them ;-)

Just change the ear pad on one side and play some mono tunes (easy if you have an iPhone, in the accessibility settings "Settings -General-Accessibility", you can choose to play mono). There is a difference for sure, the velour pads from the Amperior have definitively slightly less bass and a not so tight seal for me.

Cheers,

K

Interesting. I'll definitely give that a try!

Just installed my Midnight HD-25 cable from BTG Audio (received them within a week from shipping to AUS... happy days) and wow was not expecting such a difference. Everything is super clean now, highs aren't as harsh. These reviews nailed it. Finally done away with the 2m cable to . Seriously if anyone is on the fence with these, pull the trigger. I ended up getting the standard Midnight cable.

Awaiting the aluminum ear pads now. Now what to get next... :p

Very good looking HD25!

Let us know your findings with the ear pads!

Hmmm, not so sure if it's all placebo...

I just took my Amperior and the HD25-1 to the office and changed the pads:

Here my findings after a quick listen:

Amperior with pleather pads:

- a LOT of bass

- smaller soundstage (maybe through more isolation)

- less noise isolation

- a very FUN setup but even for a semi-bass head probably a bit too much

Amperior with velour pads (came with them):

- still solid and good bass

- more sparkle in the highs

- slightly larger soundstage, less isolation

HD25-1 with velour:

- nice, polite sound

- less impact in the bass

- larger soundstage

HD25-1 with pleather:

- the HD25 I know, good punchy bass

- more intimate soundstage

DISCLAIMER: The differences are not night and day - except the bass impact that was more obvious all other changes are rather tiny.

So in short:

Sennheiser matched their pads well. It suits both sound signatures best to leave the original pads on them, except you are after the desired effect. None is in my mind better, just slightly different.

All songs plaid via  AK100 and Gloveaudio A1 in WAV 16/44.1 format.

It was fun, now I am waiting for the leatherette pads from the Alus ;-)

Cheers,

K

@Koolpep Interesting report. I was just waiting for my kiddo to fall asleep and then I'll have a go with my new Alu leatherette pads.

My HD 25 Originals came with the pleather on and extra velour pads, though I've never once tried the velours.

I received the Aluminum leatherette pads and installed on my HD25 Originals. They are not looking so Original anymore!

They are definitely more comfortable than the other pads: the material is smoother and less bunchy. Also the center opening is slightly larger. Honestly can't tell any difference in sound quality. I tried installing only one new pad and switching to mono audio as suggested earlier and could not discern any difference. I suspect if I was using the velour pads previously it may have been a noticeable change.

I haven't found much difference in sound between the standard/aluminum pleather pads, either. It's just that the Aluminium ones are much nicer and more comfortable to wear.

The differences with earpad changes on any headphone are very rarely even close to "night and day".

Indeed.Just wanted to make that clear. As sometimes little changes are totally blown out of proportion on head-fi :-)

At least between the pleather and velour they are audible. Besides the comfort issues. I found some headphones (like the notorious HE-400) respond quite a lot to different ear pads... Also replacing my very old ear pads on the HD598 with new ones made a difference. But as you said, hardly night and day, audible though.

However, sometimes with good leather pads a new ear pad can sound worse in the beginning until it all becomes smooth and soft and gives a better seal.

Look what came in the mail today:

Now, I can give my poor restored beaten up HD25-1's a small extra copper load and a splash of colour. PCOCC-A here we come....

Cheers,

K
