AKG K701 vs. Sony SA5000 - first impressions - Page 9

I'm drifting from the HD 650 (which I can get for $274) to the AKG K701 ($318).

I figure after a couple years I might be able to find a Grado GS-1000 used for maybe $400. If it turns out to be all that, that is.

You'll be in for a long wait...

Not a chance. The RS1 has been out for a long time and you'd still be looking to pay around $500 for it used.

Considering the RS-1 goes for about 500 used and it's only 700 retail, that's never gonna happen.

Wishful thinking huh. I thought I saw a Grado RS-1 on eBay for $300.

I'm sure I'll be happy with the AKG. Anything will be better than my $50 Sony.

This is the thread that could not, would not, should not? die!

I bought a used Grado RS-1 awhile back for $400. You can get a new RS-1 for $550 if you look around. If you're paying $500 for a used RS-1 and don't want to, you're not being patient.

Still, a drop from $1,000 to $400 is big....a much larger percentage.

I encourage everyone to come to NY in April. I will have the Re-Wired SA5000’s available for audition.
So the Siltech silver/gold cable made the SA5000 much better.

Any thoughts now that you have the K701?

I think the AKG K701 is the best dynamic headphone you can buy, and perhaps any electrostatic set up.

This assumes the AKG K701 is properly amped.

Go to:

then go to archive reviews, and click on the one for Nov., 2006

The reveiwer compared the K1000 and UE Pro to the K701 and concluded:

"You have to admire the dedication of the engineers at Grado, Sennheiser and Stax, who continually polish and improve their designs, adding refinement over succeeding generations of phones. But I take my hat off to the AKG developers for thinking outside the box and coming up with radical innovations which challenge existing thinking and push the state of the art on so many levels."

"The AKG K701 is one beautifully rounded performer. Top shelf sound, superb ergonomics, a competitive price and no quirks. The new reference has arrived and I'm not letting it go. Anyone wanna buy my K1000s?"

...the hell?

Can you say completely unnecessary reason for a bump?

It seems like a good reason. It looks like he's convinced now that they rock, while before it wasn't as clear.

Oh man, this thread kinda makes me wish I heard stock SA5000's before getting my recabled ones.

AKG K701 it is

Thanks to all the posts in this thread to make my decision making much easier:

Based on all the reviews/opinions on headphones, I came to my final choice of SONY SA5000 and AKG K701. I prefer neutral and truthfull reproduction of the source, be it good or bad. Flat frequency response is the minimum requirement. The same applies to my speaker choices as well -- Dynaudio.

I placed an order from Amazon for both SA5000 and K701 with a plan to compare them myself, then keep only one and sell the other. But this thread saved me lots of time/effort to do the comparison. I just cancelled SA5000, will go with AKG K701.

This will be my VERY first headphone, besides the freebie's come with computer purchase or training classes. I will use my Yamaha-Z9 to drive the K701. Should have my shipment in a week or so. I will see what's the fuss with all the headphones ...

ok, I read further though the "review" section and found Audio-Technia ATH-AD2000 is also to my like. So place an order from audiocube.com. Also looked at the W5000 model, don't like the wood look.

Will compare K701 and AD2000, and probably keep one at home and another at work

Interesting choice, Please let us know what you think once you've had a good listen.
