Really? Hm. I might be looking at a XBox 360 then. Stuff I've heard about the PS3 has me concerned.

You can play online with XBox for free, right? You just need a connection? This might be the deciding factor of wheather I get a gaming console or better GPU.

I have an AMD 3700+ San Diego, 2 gigs running 2-3-2-5 and a 7800GT and I still feel like the XBOX 360 has me beat when it comes to just playing games. My monitor has a native 1600x1200 res so I play everything at that. But I can't max new games out. F.E.A.R. is one game that seriously depressed me when I bought it. I know there are better systems than mine, but the vast majority of people do not have them. I can't help but think they are hurting the PC market by making people upgrade to get the type of graphics they desire. After a while people just think...bah, I'll spend $400 on a 360...screw PC gaming.

Well, they do have keyboard/mouse adaptors, but games don't support them enough to make them better than controls. The lack of RTS games on consoles also puts a dampener on keyboard/mouse usefulness.

Online on Xbox generally requires Xbox Live for halfway decent gameplay.

I guess I'll just get some sort of console. It's easier to play with friends and as you many of you said, better performance overall.

I had a PS2, but I sold it. I'm leaning toward an Xbox.

I'm holding off on a 360 until one of the conditions is met:

1. The modders manage to get a decent amount of functionality.
2. Halo 3 is released.
3. Splinter Cell: Double Agent is released.

Whichever comes first. As for PS3, bah. I'm a fanboy, but for an even more ludicrous reason than most. I can't stand the button naming scheme on PS. Triangle, Square, Circle? If there's not an A and B somewhere on there, why bother?

there really isn't a point, console software is so perfectly optimised for their hardware that you can litterally get unlimited performance. its not like writing code for PC games, where you need it to be able to run on a huge list of motherboards, CPUs, memory amounts...etc, while for consoles there's always the same thing in every box.

anyhow, the X360's GPU is an ATi R510 that ATi originally intended for PCs, but scrapped and used in the 360 instead. the closest thing to it would be the R520, but thats still pretty damn different

I am new here, but I had to respond to this post. There is indeed a Mouse/Keyboard adapter for the Xbox360 and the PS3 that works nearly flawless. It's called the XIM 360, or XIM1 for the PS3. I won't be posting any links as I don't want to sound like I'm advertising for them, but you can easily find the website on Google.

I am an old school PC Gamer. I spent countless hours playing PC FPS's and loved the hell out of them. With the increase of Aimbots and other hacks on the PC, I could no longer stand it. I purchased an Xbox 360 and always hated aiming with the gamepad because it was the first time I ever played any FPS without a mouse and keyboard. I thought all hope was gone and vowed to never buy another console for the purpose of FPS games. Then I came across the XIM.

The XIM is simply as close to a PC Gaming experience that you can get, hands down. There are videos on youtube of people playing various games with the XIM, and the precision shows.

Marvin, there are Keyboard/Mouse adapters out there that are terrible, such as the XFPS. I was fortunate enough to not have purchased one of those, but found the XIM instead, and now I can never see myself playing a console without the damn thing.

Like I said before, I am not advertising, but expressing my experience as a PC Gamer playing on console.

For all of you PC Gamers on the fence about buying a console, Research this thing! You will be surprised and happy!

*edit I just realized that the last post for this thread was in 2006. Sorry for re-opening a dead thread!

As stated before, one of the largest benefits of a console is that they are all the same. After a few years, good developers find ways to push them. Performance on a PC can be up or down based on a list of things, from graphics cards and RAM, to background applications and the such.

That being said, the technology from these consoles (mind you they are now 4-5 years old) is fairly old. My 9800 GT runs games faster and at a higher resolution. Not to say I don't enjoy my Xbox. Being able to sprawl out on my couch while I play MW2 is awesome as well.
