K1000 vs R10 ... - Page 4

Wayne (whose judgement I truly respect), and others, now have me really questioning my beliefs regarding the limitations of the K1000. Actually, my decision to power this headphone with an ASL AQ-1005DT amp was based on advice given to me by Todd several years ago (i.e., prior to his establishing "Todd The Vinyl Junkie"), while he was employed elsewhere. Todd, whose judgement I respect, said that the K1000 sounded terrific when powered by this amp., which he used at the time, at his place of employment. I bought the K1000 from HeadRoom, and a used ASL AQ-1005DT, because of this opinion by Todd, although it's possible that Todd had not yet, at that time, evaluated a K1000 with multi-thousand dollar amps. I hope that in relating this conversaton, which occurred several years ago, I've referred to the correct Todd, and that I've not caused him any offence. In any case, perhaps I'll get the opportunity at the forthcoming National Head-Fi Meet, during April, to hear a K1000 that's powered by some super high quality/high cost amps.

I was not picking a war or a fight in any way..
Thought it's funny (or cute) that your so excited in the gear you always scream it as the best or w/e. Thinking how much you owned before and your not even close to bored with yet is also pretty funny (cute).

I add my impressions.

I've listened to the K1000 and R10 (with "normal tubes" and pre-breakin), some days ago at Nik's home.

I've loved the R10 sound, that I prefer to the K1000, because I feel more smooth and "embracing" (that's not saying "better" in absolute way).

But, having read a lot about the K1000 here on headfi, I was surprised to hear that "warm" sound coming from the AKG.
And the bass was the biggest suprise. Full, present and reasonably deep (with drivers very slightly angled), although I felt that it will drop a little (very little) on the deepest notes. But Nik has made more extensive and accurate listening, so take his impressions for the deep bass.

I think that R10 and K1000 complements themeselves well, so I think Nik can take them both in his setup.

bye

I have posted this argument only after the RCA tubes arrived... why? I think that (as I said) these tubes has done the most improvment to the K 1000 than to the R10...

Best!

Ok.

Well... maybe I must return to re-listen...

Anyway, can we say instead that the new tubes makes K1000 better than R10, and old one viceversa? Or the new tubes bring improvements on both headphones, but "more" in K1000?

Nik, for just a quick detour, have you tried the new AKG 701? I like reading about the R10's etc.... but truthfully I would never buy one. The AKG k1000's are interesting but defeat the whole purpose of why I use headphones instead of speakers. If you have tried the 701 .... what did you think? What amp did you use with the 701's if you tried them?

I had the 701 for some mounts and I wrote about them as a revolutionari cans, traditional cans. I bought the K 1000 just because the 701 remebered me that AKG sound...

THe 701 is not easy to drive properly... with the Leben cs-600 the cans shine and the sound is superb. My brother still has them with the same amp I have and... he is in heaven...

Having a R10 and a K 1000 I have preferred to sell the 701.

Best!

Me too have found the sound of the K701 very good (and superior to DT880 and HD650) with Leben amp. But K1000 and R10 are in another category.

Nik,

I'm guessing the difference you're hearing from the speaker output jacks is because the headphone out is using the preamp stage while the speaker out is using both the preamp and power amp stages.

The Leben's headphone out is directly connected to the output transformers of the amp, so it's using power stage

The only funny thing is that you think Nik is somehow unique in his passion. Go and crash "appreciation" threads.
