now that's impressive. how ugly are they for wearing in public? do you (personal opinion) look like an idiot? not that i care......

could someone comment on the isolation as opposed to iem's such as ety's?

like, if 100% isolation means no outside sound can get in at all, how would you rank the dj's? what about in comparison to koss ksc75's or the like? (which are obviously open)

Gear mentioned in this thread:

Sony MDR-V6 Monitor Series Headphones with CCAW Voice Coil
HARMAN K81DJ Akg Closed-Back Folding Dj Headphone
AKG K240 MKII Headphones

that's because closed phones are a pain. it's so hard to get it right at a low price, and at higher prices most people don't want to pay for closed phones that won't sound nearly as good as open

I believe this was answered earlier in the thread, the answer is, they don't isolate much. If I'm playing music at "reasonable volume" I can hear people talking in the room, though I can't figure out what they're saying. Between songs I can hear every word.

shucks, that pretty much removes the whole point for me of having portable phones; i guess i'll probably just stick with the iem's....to bad

thanks for re-answering that question

These AKGs fit around the neck no problem. The cup size are reasonably compact. Also the rotating pivot hinge makes easy to listen a la dj style too.

Comparrible sound to MS-1??

I was looking at the alessandro ms-1's as my first headphones, but they wouldnt work because they were open, and I was going to use them for everything. So will the k81's work? I listen to mostly rock and will not be using an amp, and it will be hooked straight to my ipod.

Thanks!

You dirty B@$$tards! After reading this thread I threw a K81 in with my projector lamp order at B&H Photo - and I really didn't need to be spending another $69 at the moment. Ah well, if they really improve much upon the sound of my PX100's (which I've grown tired of), they'll probably be well worth it. I plan to use them unamped out of my HD-5 MP3 player.

I've never heard a pair of DJ phones I much liked, but because of a thread here out goes the credit card. I'll let you know in a week whether ya'll are exonerated or not.

I have just ordered the k81dj ten minutes ago, after having bought the k26p one week ago and the px100 2 days ago. This forum is the most dangerous stuff I have ever entered

Wow- I thought I had it bad. Sounds like you have the portable side of things just about covered. Are you going to return the two you like least? I'm guessing I'll use the k81's around the house with the px100s for gym duties - that is if the k81's are better sounding than the px100s.

cable upgrade?

I'm going to be using these cans exclusively for portable use, so naturally the 2.5m cord is going to be a bit of a nuisance. I'm thinking of getting it shortened. I know, I know, I should just bundle it up with an elastic or buy a smart-wrap or just deal with it, but...why? I figure if I ever need the cord to be longer again (and I can't imagine why I would, as I have a pair of a500's for home use), I can just plug an extension in there.

My question is... would it be worth re-cabling these altogether? I'm pretty new to the whole headphone scene, and haven't even thought about recabling anything before, but now I'm curious. What kind of cable (if any) would you recommend? How much would it cost me? What changes to the sound would it make?

I live very close to Ring Audio, and they've replaced the mini-jack on a head-fiers pair of etymotics, so I'm confident they could at least shorten the cord for me...though I really should just go in there and ask...

Thoughts?

It would probably cost you at least what you paid for the headphones themselves and then some. Maybe AKG will read enough of these threads and realize the error of their ways and give us a version with a shorter cord.

How loud do these play unamped compared to a senn 555 for example?

I wouldn't count on it.... they're DJ headphones, not portables...

I am plenty of portable headphones atm and I really don't think I can let none of them go I am a little bit strange headphone guy: if possible, I love to hear to speakers at home so I prefer a complete range of portable ones for outside listening.

you could easily cut off the excess cable and replace the connector with one from switchcraft or canare.
