Exactly! With the cloth covering on, the midrange sounds recessed, the treble is muted, and the bass is ridiculously dominant. Removing the covering moves you much closer to a balanced sound, with the midrange becoming more prominent and the treble opening up more. The bass
still remains dominant enough to please many a basshead. Finally, if one executes the blue tak mod to cure resonance issues, you should end up with a decent low-priced "fun" phone.

thanks for the deep explanation. i don't think i'll try the blu tak mod anyway

edit: to clarify my previous post, I was saying that I was hoping that replacing the 81's pads with the (p)leather default pads that come on the 25's in stock configuration could possibly improve isolation. Velour for comfort would be nice, but isolation is more important in my case
I currently have the K81DJ's and I used to own the HD25-1 II's. I honestly think the HD25's had better isolation (only marginally) due to even more clamping force. Their pleather was also slightly softer which might make for a better seal. While I have not tried any velour pads on the K81DJ's, I preferred them on the HD25's and noticed only a very marginal decrease in isolation. The comfort was much better. I plan on getting some HD25 velours for my K81DJ's in the future.

And just to confirm for those asking, removing the extra fabric/padding from the earcups definitely removes the muffle from the treble and balances out the headphones. For my portables, I actually like the bassiness (need a little extra to hear it over the vibrations of AC units, plane, bus, and car engines, etc.) I did a recable with some silver plated copper, but didn't notice any real change in sound. They don't need any amping to sound great, however the right amp can almost always enhance a set of headphones.

I am on my second pair, as I tried to mod some mini xlr jacks onto the cups so I could roll cables, but alas, I slipped with the drill and ruined one of the drivers. I have a spare headband now in case my current one breaks (and spare pleather pads, I guess.)

hey guys, i just got a pair of these in the mail about three days ago and have since been trying to burn them in. I'm by no means an audiophile.. but I wanted to ask those of you who have these...

I'm not sure if it's my ears, a lack of burn in time, or a manufacturing problem, but the bass levels from the left channel are noticeably louder than those from the right. I might even go as far to say that the left channel is just louder in general, but it is most noticeable in the bass frequencies.

Have any of you experienced anything like this? Do i just need to keep burning them in, or could this be a problem with the cans themselves?

Cheers,

Now here it says there´s a way to mount the velour-pads of the HD25 on the K518/K81. So far so good but they would cost about 20 €uro aka 30$ USD. The K81 goes out for 50 €uro (70$ USD) here, so it IS a lot of money.
Is there a cheaper alternative? Are there cans on the market that have more detail and a wider headstage for the money of the K81 with velourpads? And if there isn´t: how do you get the new pads on them?

Edit: i am talking about such a set here(sorry for the f-ugly color):

the two small velout thingies would go on the brigde over the head, so the comfort would win a lot i guess. They would come in black i think but i dont find a picture of the set in black. I think they´re for the HD25-II.

hi guys
well, ive given up trying to get advice on my next pair of cans so i thought id ask 1 question before buying some akgs
whats the difference between the akg 518le's and the 518dj's?
as far as i can see the main difference between 81djs and 518djs is comfort and colour (correct me if im wrong, im a little confused by this aswell because the price difference is about £20 on amazon)
but what about the le's?

thanks in advance =)

The LE comes in different colors and has a shorter cord. I am pretty sure otherwise they are exactly the same.

Wait...do you take the 53 bus every morning last fall? I recall seeing a pair of portable AKGs every morning last fall on that bus, when I was working downtown TO.
