The pads on my K81's are starting to wear out after several years of use.
Any tips on where to find new ones?

Sennheiser HD25 velour pads

Hmm, so I thought I could do something about changing up the headband on the k81, aaand...I broke the headband. So now I'm stuck with two of the headphones themselves (no headband).

Any suggestions for a replacement (other than getting another k81 headband, it was far too tight even after leaving it clamped several books for several days)?

Thanks

so is it confirmed that the velour HD-25 pads fit on the k81dj? My pleather pads have become ratty and are flaking off...

Any pic of the k81 with hd-25 velours? HOw does it affect the sound? DOes comfort increase?

Thanks in advance!

Yes, it's a perfect fit. My K81's are wearing HD-25-1 velours right now. The velours diminish some of the low end bass grunt and some isolation. The isolation loss isn't too bad, and the K81's can really stand to lose some of that low end grunt as it is. The comfort factor escalates considerably. I can wear these for hours easily now.

I removed the loose fabric covering the transducers, and the formerly recessed midrange really sweetens up and blends in better with bass and treble. The treble is unmasked and rings out much more clear. People with problems dealing with high frequencies might want to keep that fabric intact though. I still need to do the blue tak mod - I already have the materials, but I want to get the APS portable V3 cable on there first.

Amping these are worth it....trust me!

EDIT: Recabling helps alot too.

These or the ES7 guys? I can't decide
The K81DJ/K518DJ/K518LE is much cheaper than the ES7...

they are the same as a set of refurb es7. that's why the decision is so hard.

The K81 will isolate somewhat better (but at some comfort expense), and if you tame the ridiculous bass on the K81 (I use iPod bass reducer EQ, others do the blue-tak mod) the mids will probably be more forward compared to the ES7. This is from what I've heard in comparisons of the two, though, as I've never heard the ES7 myself.

Well those are two different measurements. The pads are wider than back surface before it angles down.
If you're looking for the maximum diameter, my pads don't seem to measure more than 75mm at any point when taken off (keep in mind that they are not perfectly round though). The diameter of the cups on the ear side without the pads is 70mm. And as you have it in your picture, the back cups before the angled edge starts is around 56mm.

Rather funnily, the only ruler I found was metal, so when I took the measurement without the pads on it was sucked in by the magnet

I have a question..... (hello everybody btw, first post)

I just got these headphones and I like them a lot. Comfort was a little bit of an issue for me at first, but stretching out the headband seems to have cured that a bit.

My question has to do with earpad replacements for the 81DJ. I see that it is agreed that the HD-25-1 replacement pads fit the 81DJ... BUT.... I am not wanting to replace them because the pleather is uncomfortable or worn.

I DJ and I need a fair amount of isolation, especially in areas with terrible sound for headphone only mixing, and I was hoping these cans would provide more isolation than they do. I keep reading that the 81's are better than the 25's in terms of isolation, but that was not my experience. I was thinking that replacing the 81's earpads with the 25's pads would improve the isolation aspect a bit, but I just read a few posts up that swapping the pads actually decreased isolation.

I was wondering 1) if anybody else agreed with this statement, and also 2) if anybody had any recomendations for some mods or pad replacements that could help me improve the isolation on these cans

Thx in advance for any help

The HD-25 earpads aren't pleather, they're velour. Since velour is much more porous than pleather, it lets more sound through..

I can't do much for you on additional isolation, unfortunately.
