truthfully, I think you made a great point. I hated my 26ps right out of the box.

Gear mentioned in this thread:

Hey!, I'm quoting myself here. I'm having Todd (TTVJ) ship out a K81DJ to replace my Senn PX200. However, I'm still not sure if the K271 Studio will make that much of a quality difference to make it worthwhile to replace my Headphile modded Senn HD-25-1. I prefer to go straight to the K701: I like to buy considerable sonic quality improvement---not hairline increases.

Ever since I auditioned the K501 fairly extenssively at a Head-fi meet, I have fallen in love with those luscious AKG mids. It was only a matter of time before I was officially assimilated into the AKG collective.

Picture

fyi - It's not the most flattering picture in the world, but this is a thread with a picture a guy took of himself wearing the k81dj's:

Jap, get the K340's as your home use headphones... takes the standard AKG mids to another level.

What would be an open and smaller equivalent to the k81?

An MS1 plus bass?

Just got my K81DJ's today. B&H has them in stock again. I called yesterday and had them ship a pair to my office before they closed for the next holiday week.

Physically, they are a 'tweener' - halfway between the portable K26's & a full-size can such as my K270's. Earcups on the K81's are a bit larger than the K26's, and sit more comfortably on the outer part of my ears, but are still supra-aural. I suspect this will serve to attenuate noise better than with the K26's, which didn't attenuate at all. The non-foldable headband is a blessing, since it does not need to be unpacked, and readjusted for every use (a real pain with the K26's). The fact that the earcups turn and fold in, allow them to lie flat and fit my briefcase/messenger bag perfectly. As has been mentioned, the cord is long - too long. But that is a minor, and easily overcome shortcoming. Build quality rates a very good for a portable can.

Sonically, out of the box they are a bit boomy in the bass region, similiar to the K26's. Mids are classic sweet AKG style. Highs are decently extended without ever coming close to brightness or fatigue. Overall, a nice, cohesive sound signature with no noticable gaps. Soundstaging & positioning are surprisingly good for a closed portable headphone! The extra bass will work well outdoors to help attenuate external noise, and I suspect it will be less noticable in such an environment, as with my Koss Sportapros.

I will try them out on the subway going home tonight.

It's been a long while since I've listened to the V6's. But from memory, they were more comfortable, especially with the Beyerdynamic velour pads, and they are almost circumaural on me. The K81DJ's rest directly on my ears, so I am still seeing how long-term comfort is.

Sonically, I always found the V6's a bit on the bright side. The AKG's are much more temporate in the highs, and have much better mids. Both have substantial bass.

thanks for the direct comparison did you have any fatigue witht he V6's? Idealy i'd like to use the k81 portably and the fatigue issue is a problem with the V6.

No such issue with the AKG's so far.

Inquiring minds would like to know:

Can anyone tell me how long it takes to fully burn in the K81DJ? I have about 30 hours on them now.
