As with all higher-end Grados, when you first hear them you think you are about to see God!
This is my 5th pair of Grados; I will not buy anything else and these are the last I will ever need.

I'm hoping to help this with a new cable... just need some advice on which cable will do this. I've searched but not found too much outside of people DIY'ing and reporting very sporadic results.

When i got my SR225 i checked the 325s first but liked the sound of the 225s better and the were less money. My only Grados. That was a couple of years ago. I did apuresound portable recable to use them portable where quiet. Now my wife uses them on her computer and I use HD800s or DX1000s. I don't think i would go for the 235s in either account, i would just get RS-1 if I got another Grado.

i've had my 225i since may when i bought them during a trip to nyc, originally i used it with my ipod classic + ibasso T3, and the bass was a bit too much for my liking on most songs (i listen to 50 rock / 30 hip hop / 20 pop+others)
recently i've been using it with little dot dac_i and hybrid i+ with opa2107 and we408a tubes.. bass is less than the T3, and i'm still getting used to the new sound signature, but it's a good change from the T3
female rock vocals screaming at me =
I love/hate these. Anything with a drum machine sound mediocre (rap/electronic). But anything with guitar and percussion....WOW.
I am listening to Led Zeppelin 1 right now. This is amazing. One thing that I didn't notice with my other IEM's was the decay with the vocals other small details that really just make it music.
Now for jazz, classical, and rap I need to get another can, but I am happy for a moment.

Gotta say I don't understand it when people say they do not like these phones with electronic. I've modded mine a bit, so maybe I don't remember what they used to sound like, but I love them for electronic music. Shpongle, Infected Mushroom, Anders Ilar, even forum member Acix sound amazing. The bass may not be as overpowering as on other cans, but the crunchy textures of anything from IM, or the clicks and pops from Anders Ilar are breathtaking...and the bass good. I don't get it.

Mids don't feel natural. Highs a little to overemphasized for the genre. No sub bass. But other than that, not much.
It isn't bad but if you listen to the same song with a less colored headphones you realize "Oh yeah".

I assembled a new office rig: the Headroom Micro amp and DAC with the 225's.
I'm really, really having fun with this setup. I have the HD600 powered by an X-Can v3 at home, and I don't feel like I'm missing much with the SR225. The only thing the HD600 clearly does better is busy symphonic passages. I know the 225's would be good with rock, but I'm surprised that they do so well with jazz and some classical (chamber, concertos, solo, etc.)
Another thing that surprised me is that the 225's are benefit more from a good source than I thought they would.
For $200, I haven't heard a better headphone. Call me a Grado convert. (Now I'm really curios about the RS-1 and RS-2.)
i've had my sr225s for a couple of weeks after upgrading from sr80s. i got the 80s as a teenager and loved them but didn't fully appreciate them until it was too late, they were battered and bruised and on the brink of ruin.
after some burn-in, i'm so glad i took the plunge and got some new 225s. out of the box they sounded great, but after a couple of hours there was no bass, just all these ugly mids. the music sounded bad, worse than a cheap pair of earbuds. so i put them on burn in with pink noise, some FM static, and some random music for 8 hours a day for 4 or 5 days, and already they sound so alive. i was listening to them for 4-hour stretches on a long commute over the weekend with no issues, just took them off for 5-10 minutes in the middle to give my head a rest. fatiguing wasn't a problem. i figure if anything the sound will only continue to improve from here.
in terms of overall sound i find the 225s to be more 'even' and more controlled than my 80s were. they never tend towards boominess in the bass or shrillness in the highs, and there is better separation of instruments. even my girlfriend, who has never owned anything better than cheap apple ibuds, immediately noticed a jump in quality over the 80s. i have some yellow 414 pads sitting around but honestly i don't feel the need to mod these headphones at all, not even swapping the pads over.
personally, i don't see the point of striving for 'transparency' with audio equipment. nobody should be listening to their music so scientifically and analytically as to be picking up tiny imbalances in the presentation. what is really the point of listening to music (at least, listening on hi-fi gear) unless it is for some kind of entertainment and/or emotional resonance? that's why grados suit me perfectly; they are just so lively, bouncy, and engaging. it's impossible not to want to rock the fsk out when you listen to grado phones, even the cheapest models. and that could hardly be a bad thing!
