ATH-W5000 earpads can be used with the AD2000

The W5000's leather earpads fit the AD2000. They are bigger than the AD2000's ecsaine-velour pads, and slide easily onto the AD2000.

The AD2000's original pads are smaller in diameter and the elastic part that wraps onto the driver housing is smaller.

How does the comfort compare?

The leather W5000 pad initially feels cooler than the AD2000's ecsaine-velour pad but will heat up after a while. The leather feels great, but seems to have more friction than the smooth and soft ecsaine-velour pad.

I don't know, they both felt very comfortable. I guess I'll keep using the original pads on each headphone.

Awesome man thanks for sharing. What about the padding on the W5000 pads, is it thicker than the AD2000 pads?

The amount of padding inside the W5000 pads is thicker, but not as much as I would expect from wearing them. The W5000 pads feel a lot cushier.

If you feel your AD2000 pads are not thick enough or if your ears are touching the drivers, using the W5000 pads may be an option.

Alternatively, foam strips can be placed inside the AD2000 earpads to make them slightly thicker and increase distance from the ears to the drivers.

L3000 earpads can also be used with the AD2000.

I've really been wondering about those. The stock pads don't isolate for me and I had to stuff cotton in them. It doesn't look like from that the L3000 pads are any "thicker" or have more padding than stock AD2000 pads--or do they?

AD2000 Pads Have Foam Inserts...

It looks like the AD2000 pads have the foam inserts in them - resulting in their thicker appearance. I think they're a lot less full in their stock form.

I use foam strips inside the AD2000 pads. In the photo, the left pad is the AD2000 pad with a foam strip inside.

The L3000 pads are not thicker than the stock AD2000 pads. There isn't much padding inside them.

Using the L3000 pads on the AD2000, my ears touch the driver covers, similar to the AD2000 pads without stuffing foam inside them.

You can try using W5000 pads on the AD2000. They fit well and are thicker and larger than either the L3000 or AD2000 pads.

Irrespective of the amount of padding, which would you say feels more comfortable on your head for extended periods of time, and which would you guess to hold up better throughout the years of your potential ownership?

I ask this because I've been looking into making a pair of custom pads for my CD3K's and I need some ideas for fabric/materials. Pleather, leather, or some cloth/velour derivitive are all possibilities.

Thanks for any input.

The leather W5000 and L3000 pads feel very comfortable. In a warm environment, they do have tendency to heat up a bit.

The AD2000's pads are also very comfortable. It feels smoother and more comfortable than other velour-type earpads, such as the K701's or Beyer pads. They don't heat up as much as leather.

I've had the AD2000s for a month or so and when I first got them I found the fit bad. The driver covers touched my ears and it hurt to wear them for very long. I found a thread with the above mentioned mod of adding foam to the ear pads. They were much better but the rim of the ear pads still touched my ears. Now, 3 weeks later, the ear pads don't bother me at all. I don't know if the foam I add has broken in or the ear pads themselves, but, it is no longer an issue. The grip is still a bit tight and I'll try to stretch them out.
On another front, I'm using my Eddie Current ec01 to drive them. I had a Western Electric 396a in the driver position and it was the best sound with my Beyer dt990s and 880s. It really tamed the hot treble of those phones but it made the 2k's rolled off and kind of boring. After rolling a few tubes, including the stock russian, I found the Tung-sol 1954 jtl 5670 to sound fantastic! Tight extended bass (pretty much perfect for my tastes), beautiful, clear mids( pianos sound real!) and nice shimmery highs ( high hat rides and triangle strikes are spot on!). So far I've only evaluated the sound with jazz/pop and although I still like female vocals better on my 701s, the 2k's ain't no slouch. It's more preference on vocals though as the 2k's are more accurate and the 701s are more seductive (creamy, warm). Since I've plugged in the tung-sol, it's hard not to listen to the 2k's so my other cans aren't getting much use. They are pretty revealing though. They are so damn clear that bad recordings take a few tunes to get used my brain adjusted.

Just wondering if the ear holes in the l3000 pads are any bigger or smaller, more or less oval or round than the w5000 pads?
