What is the most affordable decent amp for the akg k1000?

affordable, meaning budget low cost solution that still sounds good
is it the t-amp? would a stereo receiver speaker binding posts work?

While looking for K1000 amps, I regularly checked audiogon listings for speaker amps. There are a lot of choices at around $400... Baby Sophia Dynaco ST35/70 Almarro A205A

There are some sparse impressions posted about K1000 + Sophia/Almarro amps. I eventually ended up getting an RKV to hear the famous RKV+AKG synergy

Also, I've been reasonably happy with DAC1's internal amp + K1000 (after getting a decent XLR->TRS converter). I expect that a well designed ss headphone amplifier with sufficient headroom would be quite satisfying. Maybe M3 or Gilmore Lite (both with upgraded power supply).

Go for the K1000s! And you won't even have to spend extra to recable them

The T-amp sounds fine to me, and I can't imagine a lower cost solution to K-1000 amping.

Stereo receiver binding posts would also work fine, but sound would depend on receiver quality.

I've been very tempted by the Baby Sophia, but never bit so I can't say how it sounds from personal experience. The reviews have all been outstanding and it is said to do quite well with a small speaker based system as well. I was thinking about it at one time for a bedroom setup. I love the looks of it as well.

No affiliation at all, but there is one available now at Head-Fi, which I think would bea great deal. At this price, I can't imagine that you would lose much on it if you later decided to sell it.

so what are stock k1000s terminated with?

do they come with an adapter for amps like t-amp?

is it possible to over drive and blow out the akg k1000s with the t amp?

as I was told by headroom the k1000s only require 2 watts to drive. and the t amp deliveres quite a bit more then that.

Well I know one guy around here powers them with a 500W Krell amp, so I think the only question is one of not pushing the levels too high, as I'd think you could blow out the K1K's with anything pushing much more than the spec'd limit, including the T-Amp.

Oh, and the K100's stock cable ends with a 4-pin XLR. It includes an adaptor cable for connecting to speaker ouputs, like those of the T-Amp. You need an adaptor to use it with regular headphone amps.

Been using the Super T now for 2 months. Its fantastic. I highly recommend it, espcially for the price.

Supposedly upgraded internal components too (copying the modders) and of course they ditched that crappy pot. Real binding posts on the back as well as decent RCA inputs.

I am also using the Super-T with K1000s. It is still breaking in, but it powers the K1000s incredibly well (much, much better than my Denon 3803 receiver!) and is a little smoother than the original T-Amp. For $139, it's not a bad deal.

While its not exactly low cost, the Pass Aleph 3 is driving my K1000 better than I've ever heard this headphone sound. At $900 used for the amplifier, I actually think its a great deal. A separate pre-amp is required.
