Probably old news, but I picked up my super.fi pro 5's from these guys without a hitch.

I was looking around for akg k601s and every seems to be out of stock
came across earphone solutions and they have them for $219 shipped

seems like they just have a hand few of these cans left in stock.

Ive found my guinea pig cans for my my experimental recable/balance before the I tackle the 701's

I hear these cans are a bit on the harsh side, so Im thinking Cardas 4 x 24 will be a nice match for the headphones?

So, when people "balance" phones do they just used balanced connectors that cary unbalanced audio, or do they actually use transformers to convert the audio into regular, inverted and ground signals through the 3 pin XLR?

What? Just wait for your K701's to come in and download the PDF manual from AKG on how to take the phones apart. It shouldn't be too long now. HeadRoom got a notice that their shipment is in customs and should arrive soon. I figure B&H should be soon, too.

Do you just enjoy spending money or something?

I see. So technically it's as I though. It's not a balanced signal, but a shielded signal. A balanced signal is a where the signal is split into two signals and one is set 180 degrees out of phase and they are both run down the cable. At the other end the two signals are combined and any noise that has crept in while traveling down the cable (ususally a long cable run of 20 feet or more) are canceled out. This method is required with to drive long cable runs of hundreds of feet in most larg PA's and studios while keeping noise out. Balancing a short cable run makes no difference up to about 20 feet.

By moding your phones that way your adding a sheid to a cable that didn't have one. I can't say that there is a need to do this but it would help you out if wanted to extend your headphone cables to 20' or so. I'de have to hear an A/B comparison to beleive it. It certianly would make for a much more sturdy cable that could run a longer distance without causeing noise problems.

Good luck to you and remember to keep your soulder tip clean!
