RadioShack 42-2607 cable vs. stock PA2V2 grey mini-mini... i'd love some input guys..

Well I hear constantly that the Rat shack (AKA The Source by Circuit City here in Canada) isn't neccessarily the best place to go for hi fidelity audio stuff...

Well I wanted to give the 42-2607 a try to replace the one that came with my PA2V2 and ordering online can be a pain because of customs, dutues, shipping etc. since it seems like almost every online store is based outside of Canada... I decided to give it a shot.

I have A/B tested this cable probably about 100 times now on 3 different sources with varying types of music.:
1. Creative Sound Blaster 2 NX
2. Palm Tungsten E PDA
3. GE DVD player

I have Sennheiser HD570s and Shure E2C headphones that I am testing with.

The difference is very obvious... It almost seems like there is a high frequency roll off or something... It's strange. It's almost like the detail is slightly sucked out of the recording. For example when you hear a chello playing you don't hear the texture of the bow moving over the strings as much with the Radio Shack 42-2607. The cheap looking grey cable that came with the PA2V2 seems to show more detail...

Am I immagining this or what guys? Has anyone else here made this comparison? I'm tempted to try and take the cable back and maybe think about another cable (which I suppose I'd need to find online, i've heard good things about that Cardas Cable on HeadRoom).

Here is a link to the RadioShack Site with this cable on it:

Here is a link to TheSource By Circuit City website with the cable I have on it. It would appear that it's the same cable (same model number, looks the same) but just retagged):

I'd love some input on this guys. I was skeptical at first (hence trying it 100 times, and blowing like 2 hours away LOL).

I just got the cardas mini mini, but from TrAudio, for 14$ and they have free shipping.

I like http://www.cablesforless.com/index.a...S&Category=284 for generic connectors and cables.

There stuff appears well built and I think tightly to spec (e.g. their connectors, such as their mini to mini cable, really snaps tightly into 1/8 audio ports).

Their stuff is cheap and shipping is low so I would definitely shop there before I bought anything from Radio Shack.

Well I just returned the cable. I wouldn't reccomend this cable. At least I gave it a try.

I second the Cardas HPI mini. IMO, unless you are using a high end source, you really won't see that much improvement.

Cool. Thanks for the input. It looks like that is the cable of choice.

Welcome to the beginning of the end... for your wallet!

Some day from now, you'll end up splurging several hundred dollars on cables, because you can seem to squeeze more detail, midrange, and bass impact from each increment.

Someone should seriously start a Head-Fi Anonymous...

Yea... i'm already feeling the pinch... I hate (have always hated) the sound quality of this Palm Tungsten E. It's got so much background garble, hiss etc. The Amp helped this a bit and improved the sound fairly significantly but it's still not making me happy...

I can see where this is leading... LOL! I've been wanting to dig into this for a few years now. I wish I was more able to afford it though... some day.

Thanks for the link!

i got a PA2V2 as well and had my eyes set on the cardas 6" from headphone.com but the 7$ shipping is a bit steep let alone the 26$ to ship to canada. im going to visit a friend in NYC and used that address to score some free shipping on this cable.

Do a search for "Gold Fusion" cables. The RadioShack cables that were decent were catalog id: 15-2420,
though I have never owned or heard them.
