klipsch promedia 5.1 ultra or Logitech z5500 - Page 3

Hey guys, I was pretty close on getting the T-Amp last weekend but decided to hold it off due to my lack of understanding in this subject.

I'm trying to buy my first pair of speaker (non-computer multimedia), and I'm having a hard time deciding if I should go for speakers that has amp already built in or a separate Speaker + Amp. I have about 200-400 to spend at most. Prefer to be below 300. I've looked in to:

M-Audio DX4
Swans M200 (but not even sure if I can even order it)
Edirol MA-15D

With the exception of the Swans, I can find these speakers locally. However while shopping with my other half, I saw a speaker set with the T-amp thought it was interesting. The speakers were Wharfedale CR-8 (as I recall). Now reading this thread makes me kinda glad I didn't get the T-amp.

This speaker will be plugged in to my PC and Console so I would prefer to have two input. I'd say most of time the speaker will be used to play music (80%).

Now the question is, should I try to find the Swans or the M-Audio/Edirol is fine?

Hello ksn200,

I don't think that you can find a 5.1 speaker set in the $200~$400 range that's better than mediocre - conventional or PC-oriented. The main problem for most of those is their design: They put too much of their power on the "subwoofer" and relatively little power on the satellites. Even cheap $30 2.0 PC speaker sets sound better than some of those PC-oriented 5.1's for music, IMHO. And even conventional 5.1's in your $200~$400 price range are compromised: Their sats are typically mismatched to the subs.

If you want a 5.1 set that's satisfying for most music, you'll have to look in the $1000~$1500 price range. Otherwise, if you don't want to spend more than $400, you're better off with 2.0 stereo-only bookshelf speakers.

Klipsch have major issue with their amps. They die after 1 year. My z5500 survived for 6 years and its still kicking. Mod a car tweeter to it, you are good to go. Makes the z5500 sound 10X better
