om20, om30, 0M5 cart,X-FI, rpm4 and more!

read the title back, it rhymes!
anyway
i currently have a lovely ProJect RPM4.
i traded the orginal cart (510) for a Mc15 super II, and bought a ProJect phono box SE. the sound was ok, but not what i was after.
now i`d like to move back to MM as i bought a Creative X-FI elite pro and it has vinyl inputs ( MM only ). i took the old OM5 from my debut II turntable and hooked it up to the Elite pro.
In my view the difference is night and day and i LOVE the X-fi input sound compared to the old Mc15 super II & Phonobox SEII combo.
it`s a lot clearer, more drive and better highs.
so my next stage is to get a new stylus for the om5 cart.
i was thinking of an OM20 but then the OM 30 caught my eye, so here come the questions.
1) Is the Om30 worth the doubling in price over the OM20?
2) is there a huge difference between a nude elliptical and a nude fine line? i am worried as the OM20 is Nude elliptical and the OM5 i have is elliptical too.
3) am i better just getting a 530 cart instead and forsake the OM5?
4) do i really need a SUPER om cart? my cart is just a bog standard OM cart.
thanks in advance for the advice!

Man, this is nuts - similar to selling a nice BMW for a good Golf, just because you've only used bad tyres for the former. So I'd recommend you to invest in a decent mc capable phono stage, instead - or at least in some proper step-up transformers for use with your Elite Pro (until you realize that its phono stage isn't all that great, anyway... ).

You'd best wait for recent mc cartridge users to chime in for that - my experience on mc stages is rather outdated...

That's simply a transformer that adapts MC cartridges to MM inputs. Might be somewhat hard to get nowadays, though... Hmmmm, I don't think Ortofon's priceworthy T series models are available anymore, but I've seen a not too expensive somewhere recently... Hmmmm, I think it was on AudioCubes - let me have a look... Yup, there you go, a Denon model: http://www.audiocubes.com/category/H...ng_Trance.html

going back to the question, any one any views on these points? some one must know

Hmmm, difficult - a bit more description what sound you're after could help, I guess...

Anyway, I'll give it a try:

OM20 Super vs. OM30 Super: As you apparently prefer the OM5 over the MC15 Super (forgetting about the different phono stages for a moment), I don't think the OM30 would be a good investment for you.

Nude elliptical vs. nude fine line: In general, if adjusted correctly, the fl will give you better tracking - but of course it very much depends on the implementation (= a well made, sharp (eg. 0.2x0.7) elliptical may in the end track better than a coarse fine line).

Get 530II, forget OM5: Hmmm, then I rather recommend to forget 530II, get OM10 Super needle for OM5 body, invest rest in proper mm stage. But, actually, if the hints of your taste lead me on the right path, I'd even recommend to forget OM5, get AT120E, invest rest in even better mm stage. Might be better to try some other nice cartridges from other manufacturers than working your way through the different sub-flavours of Ortofon's signature sound, anyway...

Super necessary: Technically not, if I'm not mistaken. However, if your OM5 actually is an OMB5, then I'd rather go for Super.

i understand the point your making, but i invested over 300 quid on the MC cart and the phonostage and did not liek the sound quality.
esp not when compared to the OM5, so i do not want to invest more and get a dispaointing sound. i really like the sounds coming from my x-fi & om5E so i`d like to stick with some thing i know i like then risk it for some thing that may sound better, but may not.
so the choice now is between -
om20 + super cart - £75
OM20 stylus on current cart £50
OM30 stylus on current cart £90
OM30 + syper cart £120
atm i`m tempted to get the om20 and stick it on my normal cart, but how much bette ris the om30 stylus? is it worth the doubling in cost?
