Of the Modern Classical Composers, whose your favorite? - Page 6

Scanning five pages and saw that Rautavaara hasn't got mentioned yet.  After decades of stylistic evolution, Rautavaara's mature style is marked by gently flowing, swirling melodic lines, never venturing too far from a focal point, but never repeating either.  In this sense he reminds me of Mahler's "love music" like the famous adagietto.

Try his Symphony No.7 ("Angel of Light") and his Piano Concerto No.3 ("Gift of Dreams").  He is already quite well-known but I think he still deserves a bigger audience.  Just avoid the opera Vincent.

In case anyone didn't hear the bad news, Henryk Górecki died on Friday morning (Nov 12). R.I.P.

Yes, NPR ran a nice piece on him.  What a shame, he did some amazing work.  I've had his No. 3 on SACD for some time - had to put it on last night.

Górecki is hardly my favorite, but he will be missed.

I think Birtwistle is quite approachable and people who don't know his works might find them interesting to explore.

Here's a nice one :)

Wow !

Krzysztof Penderecki, esp. Symphony No. 1. And I've got three other new discs by the same composer that I have not listened to yet :P
